The auto flywheel is nothing like the manual ones. Its just a thin flex plate that bolts to a seperate counterweight,so theres no way you could attach a clutch to it.
That said, there are also differences between the manual trans flywheels from year to year.If you use the wrong one,not only will the clutch not fit up right, but you could also damage the engine since it will be out of balance. The rear counterweight is built into the manual trans flywheel, and since the rotors changed weight over the years,so did the counterweights.
Look here to determine what year flywheel you have, then youll have to make absolutely sure that the engine you run is within the same range.

There was also a change in clutch size during the 1st gen's run,so you have to account for that too.The FAQ page on Mazdatrix site has lot of good info about engines, trans and basic RX-7 knowledge.......

wow that is just what i needed to see. it looks like the motor i have now is an 83-85 12a. my old one was an 82. big difference in the flywheel. i think ill just get a new clutch for this flywheel rather than swap them. thankls a million for the info!!!!!! you save my week....... so i guess by looking at the page on the link, i can use a cluth from an 83 and it should be a perfect fit....

I may have missed what your original problem was but you cant just stick a new clutch on the flywheel if its the wrong one for your engine. You need the correct pair of front counterweight and flywheel. The clutch isnt the issue, the auto flywheel is, from what i understand. So you would need the rear counterweight for that flywheel to be able to attach a clutch to it no?
Could be im missing something, just trying to potentially save you from buying the wrong part

Even if you swap the correct front counterweight for the flywheel you use......if they are not made for that engine, then it wont be in balance.
Remember, the front and rear counterweights arent there to balance each other out......they are there as a pair,to balance the ROTORS.The weight of the front and rear counterweights is determined by the weight of the rotors, and the weight of the rotors is determined by what year/style engine you have.

judging by the flywheel, it looks as an 83-85 motor that was a 5 speed. thats why i thought i could use an 83 clutch since i have the 81-83 5 speed tranny. you guys mentioned that the auto flywheel is thin and i wouldnt be able to bolt a clutch to it.
