Fixing a poorly done rats nest removal

Hey-
the guy who removed the rats nest on my 83 did some wonky ****. Most notably, he didn't do anything like the RX7Carl tutorial.

He blocked off all the vacuums on the carb spacer.

My manifold looks pretty good.

There is no secondary vacuum advance lines hooked up to dizzy.

Anyway... I'm getting her back on the road after a 3 year unanticipated hibernation; rebuilding and stripping the nikki (sexytime brown-chicken brown-cow) fixing the vacuum leaks, and getting it able to be tagged with antique plates.

Looking at the rats nest tutorial is a bit difficult as the pictures leave a little to be desired (not a complaint... its not you, its me) as I have the carb and manifold off and most of the bay cleared out of things that would serve as reference for those pics.

I was wondering if I need to have any of those carb spacer nipples to do it properly.

I am hoping somebody can direct me as to the actual connection points on the carb for the vacuum lines and to where they go. Actual names are good. Using the pics on the pages that I have used a lot would be even better.

Thanks JoeNoble

PS I'm not an idiot, I just took everything apart years ago and am now just getting back to it. I took pictures but... yeah those are gone.

Thanks

If you're having vacuum issues, to get the car running you can definitely just leave all the ports on the spacer capped and the vac advance pots open. That's usually how I start identifying vacuum issues!

There has been some debate about which port on the spacer is best to run vac advance from. I've always run it from the 2nd port from the front, which is where that whole mess of rat's nest used to lead it, and it's always worked fine for me. As for the purge valve, it's only really needed to prevent that kind of frothy build-up in the oil filler tube. I've run a few seasons without it, and at one point was running a PCV valve setup instead which worked quite effectively:

But to get the car running for the first time after storage you can skip that whole thing and just run with everything capped, putting the PCV or Purge Valve in place once everything's running smoothly.

Whenever I'm dealing with a car that has potential vacuum leaks, I do the whole shebang just to make sure. From a new intake manifold gasket (with freeze plugs for convenience) to ACV blockoff plate, to JBWelding shut that port for the #2AAB hose and plugging all the spacer ports except the vac advance. It helps to think of it starting from the engine-to-intake manifold gasket and work your way upward, looking for any possible source of vacuum leak and eliminating it.

maybe I should be more specific.
Dude totally creamed my carb spacer with jb weld.
But that is exactly what I was looking for mr justinfox. If I had a decent carb spacer, I would totally rock that setup.

Bump for a specific question.

Is there a suitable vacuum source on the carb to run the stripped down system, or do I have to buy a carb spacer?
