fitting larger front speakers in first gen

Hey, has anyone ever successfully put 5 1/4 or even 6 in speakers in the front of a first gen? 4 in speakers suck and I want to switch them but want to get more info/pics before I start cutting stuff apart. :D thanks

Hmmm, yes that would do it wouldn't it :D Is that your car? Is that custom made or does some company sell it? Thanks

Powerslave 03-15-02 09:31 PM

5¼ inch speakers fit in the 4 inch holes, well for me they did :) the panel is a little more difficult to fit back on but its seems ok, give it a go hey.

SilverRocket 03-15-02 09:35 PM

That is such a nicely done car... looks more like a Ferrari than an FB!

MIKE-P-28 03-15-02 09:39 PM

I made new front panels, cuz I didnt want to cut the old one, man dont ask me why. Like it was ever gonna be stock again? :) But I got 5 1/4 IMPP Pioneer 3 ways in the fron of my 85. They were left overs from an Install so I took em when offered them at work... I got 4 inch MTX midranges in the upper doors, and you dont even have to cut them out, they fit perfcetly... I just cut the carb board door panel, and left the material on the door panel in tack, doesnt even look like a speaker is there ...

Not my car, but it doesn't mean I can't do something similar.

I believe it's custom. I got it from Steve's (AJC13B) website. Supposedly it was custom made by some company called "To the Max" down under.

I don't usually like Tan interiors, but that one is very nice.

V8kilr 03-16-02 12:57 AM

you dont wanna put big speaks in your doors,
door speakers are only good for frequency's below 150hz
you will have a pretty big void to fill if you do,
you could add tweets but your void will be 150hz-1khz

no midbass
go with kick panels,
they were just up on ebay,
some one got the link?
some guy made them
sure he'd make you a pair if you asked.

btw why is name 82transam?
no offense but do you think we care about your 82 ta?????

sorry just an odd sig,
by the looks of the way you chose your sig it doesnt look like your to serious of an re-enthusiast
just my pov

Felix Wankel 03-16-02 01:00 AM

Actually, theres more on his site about the RX-7 than the TA.

V8kilr 03-16-02 01:01 AM

then why support the ta???
especially here???

spoolin 03-16-02 02:38 AM

you can build your own panels. pull your door panel off; remove pocket; straighten all the metal thingies and take off the lower panel for measurement. there is a section on the door that is square looking, kinda recessed with a 10mm bolt in it, open that up for sound waves to use the door cavity for an enclosure. little cutting, little carpeting and you end up with some mix matched components consisting of JL audio 5.25" mid-bass driver's and som MB Quart QM 19nx's. see for yourself...

Why are you so worked up over a user name? Am I Felix Wankel? No. Your car won't kill too many V8's like it is.... Am I bitching? No.

spoolin 03-16-02 02:42 AM

the carpet might not match...for i'm truly colorblind, but i hear just fine.....:)

82transam 03-16-02 07:38 AM

hey v8kilr no offense but :bgfuk: if you want to come out here to NJ we'll race, my TA vs your rx7 and we'll see how much "V8 killing" you'll be doing. I love a wide variety of cars, first gen rx7's being my favorite but I also love muscle cars as well. I've been a muscle car guy way longer that an rx7 guy. Yea I like my rex better but I still like my TA too. Plus Felix is right it's just my fucking user name it doesn't mean I like TA's and not rx7's. chill out man. Hey Felix, thanks for visiting my site, your probably viewer # 00001 :D

Felix Wankel 03-16-02 07:42 AM

I wanted to see some TA stuff. I used to have a worked 79 400/4 speed :)

82transam 03-16-02 07:50 AM

Don't worry Felix stuff for the TA will be up soon. Right now it's sitting there waiting for me to work on it. It needs and engine rebuild and reapint. Black with gold along the bottom (Like the Recaro edition) I'll get some pics but right now the "cool" green paint job'll make ya want to throwup on it. Stupid previous owner painted it that color. foolish person. Oh sorry v8kilr, am I talking TA's too much for you I'm sorry, NOT!!!!!

see thats typical

why didnt you say,
"we'll race my 7?"
and yes i have had seen plenty v8's in the rear view,
if i end up at mike p's for the engine swap i'll bring some footage,
mostly put the hurt on mustangs,
its all street racing clips.
its just experienced driver vs. some punk kid "not you the guys i race" who's mommy bought them i shiney new toy for graduation.

if you now your 7 you can make it run in a rolling street race,
i seem to know mine pretty good.it's my 5th,my 3rd 1st gen.

rx7's are the only cars i've ever owned all my life:D

any i just wouldnt go to a ta board and have my name 84rx7,
i'd get flamed on bad
if you would like we could do an example at like camaroz28.com if you like?

but nevertheless NONE of my POSTS are to be intended as flames,
i was just making a simple observation.

MIKE-P-28 03-16-02 08:43 AM

Well on my 85, I put those 4's in the hole that was already in the door, I didnt really wanna get into making door panels and such. I was kinda busy at work and after doing that Lexus around the same time, I pretty much opted a pass on it :)

On my 80, I built buildouts and had 2 5 1/4" midbasses. I had a removeable grill and when you removed the grill the inside of the door buildout was mirror. And before anyone asks I have a pic somewhere and Ill have to 'sideways' Bob to scan some more. I think hes growing weary of me asking :)

David that was kinda uncalled for dude, I love the 1st gen RX-7 myself, but when you say muscle cars I liked the old chevelle, the old nova's and old camaros, stuff like that. I think there are a lot of people that like all sort of cars... :)

The absolute antithesis of what I believe this Forum is about. Obviously, I like the interior job, but I can't stand unlimited budget repops. You're looking at probably $4 Gs of interior work that cant' be easily replicated by 98% of the members here. If that's OK, then we all need to step up to an Aeromotive fuel pump immediately and ditch the Carters...

---> 82transam Buy an adaptor ring or make one out of 1/2" MDF that will accept your speaker. After drilling it to accept your speaker, fasten it to the interior sheetmetal. Get your panel piece and loosen the carpet or vinyl covering and open up the hole so it fits over the new MDF ring when installed. Put the panel on, tuck the carpet or vinyl into the ring. The whole effect will be a gentle rising of the panel material to your speaker. attach speaker and then the grill. If you really want to make an SQL impact, play with tilting the speaker up and towards or away from your listening postion in the driver's seat (get a buddy to help, it's a lot easier, trust me...) to find your speakers best imaging angles. Start carving away at the MDF ring to keep that angle and repeat the above steps. Minimal money involved, just your time. Now you've got a little more $$ saved up for the superior Mallory Comp110 fuel pump...

MIKE-P-28 03-16-02 09:20 AM

I second that, thats probally a $4k trim job...

I just love the ones that come into my shop and go I wantmy Explorer like this one in the magazine, Im like thats probally a $10k install. not counting equipment :) LOL I love the look on their face :)

V12kilr 03-16-02 09:23 AM

I work at a stereo shop at the momment and it is easily possible to acieheve powerfull bass from your doors!! You just have to make a sealed enclosure....

Why are you attacking a guy with a TA? My money is on him!! With your mods a 4 banger is a challenge!! HAHAHHAHA Your car is practically stock! That's a REALLY nice Camaro hood scoop you got there... Why you flaming a guy with a TA when you got Camaro parts on yours! :dragster:

We've all seen pics of your interior , there's nothing to talk about.....

mar3 03-16-02 09:23 AM

I bet you like it even better when they don't flinch and say "OK...":D

Max7 03-16-02 09:46 AM

Well you just lost all my respect, have a nice day.

Good article on putting 6.5 speakers in door panels. at http://www.monito.com/wankel click on wrenching then go for Jim Rothe audio page. Take a look.

85RX7GS 03-16-02 09:53 AM

I've seen some pretty nice custom made panels that fit into the stock kick-panel location on Ebay. I would try to locate this auction, but the computer I have at this office is slower than slow. I think the auction started at $75, but it was nice, as the panel was designed for a component set with tweeters and a woofer.

82TransAM - "Finnity KaPA speakis" and "SubWUFFer" lol

I'm hoping also that 'V12kilr" doesnt allude to his ability to beat Ferrari F-50s or Bugatti EB-110s with his streetport '85 SE that kicks out 750 HP N/A....:(

82transam 03-16-02 02:34 PM

Lol at 85rx7gs: yea vinni is so gay (iside joke, we don't expect any of you guys to get it, so don't bother trying) Hey Mike-p-28 thanks for putting your "money" behing me :) My TA has over 300 hp at the wheels so I think it will wipe his car. I don't want to piss anyone off but v8kilr, you started it by attacking my user name. First off I use that as my user name for just about everything. It allows me to not have to remember a ton of different user names. Besides I have been on this forum for a month and you're the first on to care about it. So leave me alone, I own and drive whatever I damn well please.

82transam 03-16-02 02:42 PM

Oh yea, We seem to have gotton off topic as usual. Anyway, I want to thank all of you non-jerks who gave me some useful tips/pics about my original question. I'll probably go with 5-1/4 and simply modify the kick panel. It'd be cool to put them in the doors, but that's alot of work and I wany my interior to remain somewhat original. I will be flush mounting tweeters in the doors. Thanks again everyone. :)

mar3 03-16-02 03:38 PM

Make sure those tweets are as close to your panel speakers as you can get them or you'll blow your SQL...

82transam 03-16-02 03:44 PM

Really? Thanks for the tip Mar3. :)

V8kilr 03-16-02 04:47 PM

hey im not a jerk, you just made me out to be one,
im trying to help you with your headliner right now in another post????
if you use the name for multiple things then fine,i do the same and understand 100%
but never the less i would never try to hop in an f-body forum with v8kilr "not saying your name is as harsh to the comunity as mine would be to their comunity"

anyway braggin bout hp means nothing to me,
i'll have to upload the vid of me spankin a 93-97 mustang cobra
then tell me what i think of hp figures
i shouldnt of stood a chance,
but.......
well ask "v12kilr"
he seen the tape
he'll admit to it as long as he's done being grumpy

82transam 03-16-02 09:02 PM

What do you have under the hood of your rex? beating a mustang cobra is quite a feat for a first gen. Power to weight ratio advantage only goes so far. You must have some serious shit to do that.

I wasnt taking anyones side I just was saying what he said to you was kinda uncalled for... :) But anyways, I like all sort of cars, especially with High performance mods... :) I used to love to go to Car Craft in Du Quoin, ILL and look at all those $20-35k rides :) I dont care what anyones user name is nor what they drive. Only way I throw my weight around is if someone attacks me, otherwise if its a mustang, honda civic or an old muscle car im happy :) To me you both got nice rides :)

82transam 03-16-02 09:18 PM

Thanks dude that means a lot. When I signed up on this forum I didn't even think that naming myself 82transam would annoy anyone. Oh well, what are ya gonna do? The TA was my first car (rex is second and current car). I got it from my brother and I like it. Note: this does not mean I don't like rx7's or rotary's or anything like that. Far from it. I love first gen rex's, they are one of my favorite all time cars. So I hope anyone isn't really mad at me just cause of my dumb user name. If it really annoys anyone that much I'll change the damn thing. Oh well, just wanted to clarify (I probably just confused everyone more but I tried :D) thanks

82transam 03-16-02 09:22 PM

Hey another question, why is the "racecar" smilie face a 3rd gen camaro? Someone who is good at making those funny little images should make a first gen rx7 smilie face. Better yet, I know a site that has a 82 trans am smilie face!! Sorry I had to say that :D But I'm not lying I actually do know a site with an 82 TA smilie. :D :D :D

82transam 03-16-02 09:27 PM

I'm sorry I just can't help myself, check out the pic. :D
