Fitting aftermarket rims to rear hubs

Can someone explain what the two aluminum pieces are theat stick out above the face of my rear hubs? They make my rims not seat correctly (I've got to machine down between the lug holes of my rims to fit) and I'm wondering what they do and if they can be somehow eliminated. How do you guys get around this?

Do you mean the two little phillips screw heads that stick out? They're used to locate the rotor on the axle. Most rims I've seen usually have a recess in those areas to allow them to sit flush on the hub.

Well, mine don't look like screws. They're soft (I guessed aluminum) and look to be like sleeves. If they're structural and on the rear axle, I'd expect them to be a lot beefier. So, they can't be removed and you just have to machine recesses into the wheels? Can that just be done on a mill and then have them rebalanced? My wheels have recesses, but some aren't deep enough so my wheels won't sit flush to the hub (I've moved my deepest ones to the rear for now).

Sounds weird... can you take a pic?

The screws aren't structural. All they do is line up the holes in the rotor with the thread holes in the axle. The lug nuts are what actually clamp the rotor down between the axle and wheel.
