first start after 8 year barn storage.

I'm totally new to the RX7 world and this is my first post.
I've aquired a 1979 which I found in a barn. It has 157k miles and I have the service records from the first 100k or so (2 owners). Other than that I know nothing else about the car accept that it seems generally in good shape for a 79. I put a a battery, new starter, fresh gas, some lubriacant in the spark plug cylinders turned it over some without the plugs in place and the coils detached. Then hooked it all back up and went for the start up. It fired right up, reved at about 3-4 K for about 60 seconds and shut down. After a wait and a check about I tried couple more times with similar results. Next I'm replacing the fuel filter thinking it might be starving for fuel..?
I'd appreciate any helpful comments before moving on.
Thanks,
jt

Congrats on the find do all the carb linkages move without binding, take off the air cleaner and verify the accelerator pump squirts and the butterflies all move smoothly. 3-4k sounds abnormally high even on the choke.

Under the banjo bolts on top of the carb are small screen filters, i usually check these first (because most people check them last/not at all). With the banjo bolts out you can also spray carb cleaner into the float bowls/float needle jet.

Thanks. I did notice that the exhaust system is in rough shape and I do see some oil leaking from a crack in the exhaust pipe after these starting attempts. Is this big engine trouble or is it because I have the system leak and the burn isn't completed?
