Cool first rx7 and having serious tuneup problems

It started after I drove it for several days. I had temp tags and wanted to make sure she ran good before inspection. Then after 200 miles of stop and go , the 79rx7 12a started missfiring, and backfiring. Several times after turning the engine off , a huge backfire . I made it home and attempted to tune it up myself. I Read the manual and installed new points, condensors , rotor , plugs, cap. I tried to use a timing light on it , but the the timing marks can.t be seen. I just can't get that missfire out of it. Now i'm thinkin the carburrator went sour. Tail smells like raw gas and Cad converter is getting hot from running. some plugs are black and some plugs are wet from not firing at all. The coils are sending juice. I need help with this thing before I make it worse. Around here , the local mechanics don't want to touch it, like its a pain to work on. Somebody help me out here and make me happy to own a rotory. I always used to own mustangs, but I thought I would give the rotary a try.

The first thing that I would do is convert your points ignition system to electronic ignition. It is easy and you never have to worry about adjusting the points gaps or wearing out points again. This may cure your problems but you probably need to give your carb some attention. If it has never been rebuilt it is probably time. You can get a rebuild kit and do it yourself but it is kind of involved and if you do not have a good work area do not attempt it. There is a guy on here call Sterling that rebuilds the carbs for a reasonable price and from all I have heard does top notch work. Those are just a couple of suggestions. I definately would conver from points to electronic ignition. I did it to my 79 and it was well worth it. Do a search to find a step by step procedure as to how it is done and what you will need. I am sure there is one on here some where. If you can't find it let me know and I will give you a link to one.

Good Luck!!

thanks for the info, i was going to try that next. I did it with a 69 comaro I had. Ran like a bat out of hell after that. Do you think the misfiring and rich exhaust is from a much needed carb rebuild? and How would you ever time this car if you can't find the timing marks. I've looked for hours and I clearly see the Pin but I turn the engine over at a snai's pace and there is no marks on it. How will I find the timing mark. in order to time it?
