Oh my god. check it kg. its a total cream dream. You'll see the vacuum hoses (if gramps left any one there), they look like .5cm steel tubes. You don't have the vast majority of them because the rats nest has been pulled, thanks to gramps. He needs to get on this forum. I bet he knows everything. I bet he knew Wankel

Er, um. Actually, the vacuum hoses would be rubber. Little rubber tubes connecting everything. These tend to crack and get brittle over so many years, so they need replacing. I like to say if the hoses are more than five years old, you should probably replace them all.

If these are not replaced, they will cause a lack of 'vacuum' which is best explained as a 'negative pressure.' This, in turn, causes a myriad of problems, such as the car not starting or idling.

I'm more than glad to do any further explaining.

Yeah, I guess it would need a new battery, or a charge. It's probably dead by now. Thanks for pointing that out to him

Forget what everyone said!!!!

Do this in order and you will be happy!!!!!

1. put all of you money aside and count it
2.start calling u-haul,budget,etc etc and find out how much you can rent a car carrier for.
3. put that baby on top of the car carrier.
4. this sunday get in the flatbed and drive it with the rex on top down to rotorfest
5. let us tweek the car all day to get her running
6. put the "running" rex back on the flatbed and drive home
7. monday morning do some donuts infront of your friends
8. try like hell to wipe that smile off your face
9. set the hyundai on fire and roast marshmallows!!!1

i think this is your best plan of action!!!!!!!

With that carb setup, you should probably only have one vaccuum line coming off it going to the brake booster.

Well, that would be great and all aside from two problems. I just spent 4 hours moving lumber to clear a way for us to move the 7 into a workable area. But the brakes are seized and she won't budge. Also, I don't have the $ available for new filters, hoses, and the likes. And apparently I might now need new brakes. Tis a shame :\

Oh, I'm already in love with her. The first time I saw her I was 8 years old and I thought it was the fastest looking car I'd ever seen. And my feelings haven't changed 13 years later now that's she's mine.

cool start on the site, I checked it out. My 83 is my third one, was a gift last year when I came home from Iraq. Its an LE and I have been replacing everything under the Sun. Not that I had to, just want to make it as clean and like new as possible. You are in for quite an adventure, again good luck and Congrats! -Scott

Congrats Man on your Car. Also take it easy, patience is the key here. Give major loving to her and take good care of her. Follow the instruction that every is telling you here. Honestly I never knew how to work with my car until I got it and started getting dirty on it. Trust me and trust others here. It is worth learning from this cars and getting dirty. In the end you will look back and be like. "DAMN! She is Hot! and the work I put behind this project was all worth it."

Okay, after reviewing the photos I take back my comment "keep it stock". Obviously this car was owned by a real 7 lover who took the time to make some "adjustments" already, so you might as well continue the tradition...

One thing to keep in mind is that even if you take a part off the car, as long as you keep it handy (like the original engine) then the value of the car has not been damaged as much due to the fact that it can be returned to stock condition.

As far as upgrading and mods go, dealing with a '79 one of the first things that I would recommend is an upgrade on the distributor and go to a direct fire ignition setup. The later model dizzy can probably be had from a junkyard for 20 or 30 bucks and a 2nd gen coil pack would run another 20 or so. This is everything that you would need to make a huge difference in the starting, overall running and driveability, and performance in general.

Another piece of advice; clean, clean, clean!!! Cleaning the car's exterior, interior, engine bay, wheels, underbody, and anything else that you can reach doesn't cost a dime. And it greatly effects the overall value of the car, both to you and to everyone that sees it. Cleaning the parts that don't usually get cleaned well (like the engine bay) is an excellent investment that you can make in your car. And did I mention that it costs nothing?

Take your time, don't rush any part of this. If you take a part off of the car for any reason, clean it until it shines like new before you put it back on. Make this a habit and it will pay off in the longrun. Best of luck to you!

Oh yeah, for the brakes: The pads/shoes have most likely rusted to the rotors/drums. That's not as bad as it sounds though. It will probably take some creative use of a large hammer to get them apart, but all you should need to do is replace the shoes/pads and have the drums/rotors turned.

However, make sure you take a real hard look at the rubber brake lines (close to the caliper or cylinder). If one of those goes unexpectedly they can create problems that you don't need (like rear-ending someone). They will only fail when you're using the brakes, therefore they only fail when you need them.....

Is that spoiler factory or aftermarket?? you've got the makings for a real nice 7 especally if it's been garage er barn kept, out of the sun and out of the weather only proble would be mice, after 20 years they might've made a mess of the wiring.

Finally an SA that isn't red or yellow

Looking good I've got a similar project lucally it sat only 3 year but in the guys yard.
yours will give me insparation to get mine done.

It's an aftermarket wing, but my grandfather doesn't remember the mfr. unfortunately. I'm really hoping the brakes are an easy fix, I'd like to be driving it by the end of august. (Think that's too much to ask?)

hell no. August is completely doable. You're 21, so I guess that means you're in school (out on holiday). Sounds like a summer project. Who wants to work anyway? Dump that job, quit that girlfriend. Get into your new hobby, Love this, because one day your son will be 21 and he'll be all like I'm not doing anything, I worked for this vacation. Blah blah blah. Tell him how you restored this car with your g-pa and now he should shut up and get you a beer and wax your rx. That ungrateful little bitch.

Weeeeel, she's free! Changed her battery and everything works electrically (without turning her over) but the right flipup light is stuck. The brake weren't fubar but man they had alot of black crap stuck in 'em. I gave her a once-over, maannnn she's dirty. And there is alot more superficial rust than I thought. Very minor though. We had to use a powerloader to move her, but once we did she rolled on her own. Herrrres some pics.
