The braided metal wire is sheilding from Radio Frequencies. Keep it.

Try the 2nd gen pump, unless it's an in-tank guy. I used an -SE pump. There should be aftermarket pumps available if you look around.

2nd gen fuel pump and carrier fits great into the 1st gen tank.I did mine that way and upgraded to a SupraTT pump. But you have to make some important mods to the tank to make it proper. The BEST(BY FAR) way to feed fuel to a 2nd gen engine is to copy the 2nd gen fuel system as closely as possible. Its a proven factory system that is common to almost every vehicle on the road. That being an intank pump, high pressure, quiet, full loop fuel system.
The 2nd gen slosh box needs to be welded into the FB tank,as does the mounting rings for the pump and vent. Its not a big or difficult job,but you may have to search to find a shop willing to weld/solder in a gas tank. The 1st gen tank is the perfect height and the pump will require no modifications.
Replace the small, stock return hardline with another stock FB feed line.Itll be the right length and shape, just lay it right along side the existing feed line. Now you have a feed and return line the same size as the stock FC hardlines.Replace all the rubber hose with EFI hose and EFI clamps from PepBoys,Kragen,Napa, ect.Plumb the stock FC fuel filter at the base of the firewall, before the engine hardlines.
Piece of cake, not very expensive, and it has factory reliability. You can mess with external pumps too,but they are noisy and you still havent adressed the issue of fuel slosh inside the tank.I ran my FC intank pump for a week without the sloshbox(while my 2nd tank was being welded up) Anything less than 1/3 tank and the engine will cutout on lefthand turns. Not fun and downright dangerous.YOU MUST HAVE A SLOSH BAFFLE/BOX.....regardless of intank or external pump.
