Talking Finally finished my exhaust... a few observations...

Back in the fall, I started exhaust update for my SE. went RB: the header and the pre for the 13b replaced the stock parts. However, since we didn't have the right bending gear available to us at that time, the stock muffler was put in place.

Yesterday we finally put on the muffler: NOT a RB unit, but a Magnaflow. The stock factory tips were welded on, so it looks really stock.

I was stunned on the SIZE of the stock muffler! That thing must weigh 50 lbs! Between that part and the exhaust manifold, the car must be 100 lbs lighter.

The sound of the car with the RB header/pre and stock muffler sounded to a casual observer like, and I quote, "a pack of angry bees." The Magnaflow swap out gives the car a deep rumble. Still has some of the rotory sound, but not tinny. I keep looking for the V8 when I start the car!

An open question: any idea on the weight savings or HP gain from making this exhaust swap? The rest of the car is stock.

Stock muffler is probably closer to 30-35 pounds. Exhaust manifold is 20 pounds, same as RB header.

HP gaines are all in exhaust pipe diameter you used and engine+mods. Probably you gained about 10HP. That's just a guess.

Yeah, I want to hear it! I've been thinking about replacing my RB muffler with something a bit more "outspoken". It sounds nice inside the car, but the first time I let somebody else autocross my car I heard it from outside and it sounded like crap. I hated it.

I heard some awesome sounding exhaust systems at DGRRX, but didn't have a chance to catch up with the owners to find out what they consisted of. DJ55b (I hope I got that right) has an incredible sounding exhaust, and a wicked fast car to go with it. But I'm sure the port job changes the sound of it too quite a bit. But I've gotta find something better, and from what you've described it sounds like that might be it.

I'll have to make a video this weekend. I am sure you'll hear it live at the Dream Cruise in August! But I'll get something online sooner.

You need to come down for a race some time. We've got a really good one coming up May 8/9th. I'll probably be having a rotary BBQ/campout in my backyard again so you'd have a place to stay already. Last year we had 14 rotaries at this event.

Here's a short video from my Flip camera. Pardon the quality.... Steven Spelberg has no need to fear me. But you'll get the idea!

I am in love with my Racing Beat exhaust setup. It is the perfect sound for me and the performance was very nice. At the time it was a little more pricey than the magnaflow setup. Once I get my baby a little more presentable I will start posting pics and vids as well. That's a beautiful car though man. Can't wait until I get mine back to her former glory.

i tried so many different exhaust setups on my old black Rx7, once you put headers on its going to be loud as hell no matter what you do, keeping it as a straight through flow at least. i think my best setup was with a pacesetter header to 2.5" piping to magnaflow high flow-cat, to a small resonator to the straight through magnaflow muffler shown in the attached pic. i also think glass packs and a slightly lesser flowing muffler would keep the noise sounding great and not too loud.

your car sounds and looks good. i like!

Thanks Kentutsu, I've been meaning to post up sound clips but I just keep on forgetting. I'll for sure get some recorded tomorrow sometime. Without the tips on there, its definitely a very race car sound without any pinging. You haven't heard it with my silencer tips on there. You'd be amazed at how quiet it gets inside and outside.

For the record, my system is all custom made. From the custom made SDJ headers, the all tig welded stainless steel mufflers (3" in the center acting as an expansion chamber with proper megaphone and reverse cone, and also a 2.5" inlet to dual 2.5" outlet the back), to the all tig welded stainless steel exhaust tubing.

The thread about the whole build is here:

Yeah, you guys have about convinced me that I want something more than the RB is giving me. pjr, your car sounds awesome man. Now you just have to bring it over for that race in a couple of weeks so I can hear it in person.

Sam, one of a day I'll get a ride in your car.

I dig it. Has a little bit of a VR6 rumble to it.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. When I first stared my plans, I also was thinking about eliminating the pre as well, but you guys talked me out of it.
