Finally, Figured out what has been happening!

Hi all,

As many have seen from my posts here, I have been putting my 82 back on the road and had some fun along the way. Here is a summary of what the problems were and the answers.

Inconsistent Fuel Levels were caused by bad floats, bad fuel pump, and an old fuel filter. Word of warning about replacing the fuel pump: Don't rely on the fuel line hook up for the old fuel pump. I hooked up mine the same way as the one I took off only to find out that the fuel was actually being pumped out the opposite way. Make sure you check it.

Yellow crap on the floats was another set of bad floats. They were old and sucked up the gas then dried out.

Once levels were set and good floats were in place the car still wouldn't start. This was caused by three things. 1) The jets were f%$#ed, 2) The check ball was gummed to the bottom of the carb, and 3) The actual jet passages were completely screwed. Don't know what cause the last one but it finally made me scrap the carb all together and pull one of another 82 I have.

The high revs were caused by a combination of the carb setup, a leak in the intake, and a jammed hot start assist. The intake leak was caused by a crappy intake gasket that I got from mazda. The thing was mainly paper and it tore while I was torquing the intake. The jammed hot start assist was fixed with good wd-40

Now she starts like a charm. I still need to get the idle correct but she starts every time!

Thanks for all the suggestions and help from everyone here.
