When I used to make molds for the bottom of sub boxes to be the same as the car, I used vaseline nothing sticks to that ****

 

Im in the process of building some pieces in Fiberglass myself, but what are you guys using to make the molds?? I've been using Tin foil and carboard, and to say the least...Its garbage, lucky for me it doesn't have to look good.

 

try molding clay depending on what you are doing... interior stuff like consoles try a wood frame with a tshirt stretched over it then fiber over that.

Make sure you have it pulled taught, then just lay it up.

Anyone recommend a good vacuum system?

 

I will have a nother couple made this week, I will take a pick when I get them done.

The only problem with the vaseline is sometimes the petrolium in the vas. will cause a reaction with the gelcoat and cause "fisheyes".

 

I do it several ways. I think the best is to take the factory part, make a fiberglass mold out of that, produce a fiberglass part, make the modifications in the fiberglass part, then make a mold off of that, then make the final part..........you all can see why it takes sooooo long and why it is sooooo expensive!!!

You can also make a part out of wood(or carvable foam works good too), bondo it, sand it, prime it, wet sand it, and wax it up and then make your fiberglass mold. The part that you make the mold off of is called the "plug".

 

A fiberglass rear hatch, with louvers and some plexiglass inserts there so you could see out the back of the car would be great for weight reduction.

But doors are also one of the best things to make. Also consider fenders, the stock fenders are pretty heavy.

I assume there are already fiberglass hoods available, but a really cheap one would be cool

 

Raptor13x, he's got hoods available... pretty inexpensive too. Fiberglass $250 plus shipping and combo CF/Fiberglass for $375 plus shipping... these prices were current the last I checked.
