Hey guys,

I have two sevens. Don't know if I am going to sell one and part the other yet, but what I have is a very nice 83 GS with a bad motor and a very rusty 84 GSL-SE with a good motor. I'd like to put the GSL motor in the GS, aside from switching the motor, I imagine I have to pull the entire engine wiring harness. How about the dash wiring harness? Are they one and the same?

Any help would be appreciated. I was also wondering how long this swap might take.

i would swap the whole thing dash included i like the 84-85 dash better

I like the newer one too, since it is a GSL-SE, it has all the bells and whistles (PW, PL, etc etc) and that nice silver center part.

I was planning on switching over the front and rear suspension as well if I keep it. But just wanted to see what was involved with the switchover..

As far as I know, there is a lot of difference between the 81-83 and 84-85 models. Not just the dash design, but also the wiring harness. In Europe all LHD 84-85 1st gens are 12A powered, but still got all the uprated goodies from the GSL-SE, minus 13B engine and PS. And since I have all three types (79-80, 81-83 and 84-85) I can say there's quite some difference, connectors won't fit.

Put a carb on the 13B and you don't need to change anything.

also the 84-85 bodies are better becuase they have the suspension lower control arms like moved back 20mm to prevent the tail end from coming around...not that it isn't fun

I would find a nice 84-85 body with no sunroof like an s model with no power window etc, so it will be as light as possible, then switch over the engine and the suspension / brakes. Then take out all the insulation, soft and hard. Spare tire...Toss the a/c and power steering too...get an exhaust and intake...that thing would move

I was either going to sell one RX7 and part the other, or do this little project. Someone did offer a carb and intake but it is a little out of my price range. I guess I wanted to gauge how hard it would be and how long it would take.

After taking a look at the two cars it doesn't look like it will take a ton of time. Still everything needs cleaned up (the 83 is clean, the 85 is a rusty IL car).

Yeah, I knew the geometry changed and that was one of my questions too because I wanted to use the GSL-SE axle in the 83. I hope that I can still do it.
