A few newb questions about idle problem
OK, so Sunday I take the RX out to the mall. No problem starting, etc. When i get back in the car 20 minutes later, it is idling really rough. I put it in drive (it’s an automatic) and it stalls. Try again, bang head on dash, repeat process... I manage to get it home by giving it gas and holding the choke out while braking for stops.
So, according to the threads I saw about these symptoms, I am working my way down the list:
- Changed gas filter
- Checked for vac leaks - none found.
Tonight I will tackle the ignition. So first question; what’s the easiest way to test the ignition, just pull the plug and hold it to the engine body, and check for a spark? I will probably end up replacing the distributor cap and wires anyway.
After that, the dreaded shutter valve. I didn't find anything in the archives describing how to test if it is working (just lots of discussions about ripping it out).
Question 2: So how can I test the shutter valve without removing the whole carb?
Thanks!

It sounds like the leading ignitor to me (2 little boxes on distrbutor- 1 leading, 1 trailing). You can swap them out and see if your idle improves greatly (probably will). As far as checking for spark you can pull the plugs like you said but I always shock the crap out of myself that way. Last time I just used my timing light. No light = no spark on that wire. Carb advice should come from someone else....

Thanks guys. So I can just swap the trailing and leading ignitors and see if it still stalls whe i put it into gear? If one is bad, what should I expect to see when I swap them? i.e. doesn't stall anymore but no power at higher RPM or something???
I'll give it a try tonight.
