FC engine?
Can this swap be done?
I just got an SA22 with a suppossedly good 13B, but I checked the compression and it's dead.
What's involved in swapping in a 6 port FC engine? just the front cover and put 3 bolts in the old motor mount hole in the oil pan? or what?

If it has an old four port 13B you should rebuild and street port it......just seems better for an SA than a 6-port
If you want to put a six port in it's very streight forward, search the first gen archive and you will find every little detail on what you need......

Take the front cover and oil pan off the 13B thats in the car and put it on your S4 or S5 engine. The engine will just drop in then. But they are right about the rebuild. If it is a true non turbo 4 port 13B (rare engine), rebuild it. It has more potential than the 6 port will ever have.

Look at the plates and see if any of them say R5 in raised letters. Also try to see if they're nitrided like all '79+ engines. Nitrided R5 13Bs are the newest of the old style 4 port engines Mazda produced. They came stock with an '85 and older style front cover, high volume oil pump, and an automatic counterweight. The spark plug holes have a semi-circle preventing the instalation of non-rotary plugs (one I tore down the other day for inspection and reassembly had a couple BR7EQ in it, which is a hot plug for luxury car type driving) These engines seem to date from the 13B dry spell we had in the states, between '79 and '84 when all we got were 12As in the 1st gen. I think they came stock in the HC Luce for a few years because the HB Cosmo had a 12A in it.
Here is what I found out about the oil pan swap situation of the FC engine I'm currently working on. The intermediate plate has two motor mount holes as well as one standard oil pan bolt hole. The FC oil pan lacks the small hole, but it's fine because the stock motor mount on that side more than makes up for it. I'm very glad that Mazda kept the engines more or less backwards compatible through the years. This means I can swap on a 1st gen front cover and oil pan and all the bolts will line up. Even the pickup tube casting area is the same.
