FB flywheel interchangability?
This was posted on rec.autos.rotary earlier today. I'd like to help the guy find his answers, if I can...
I an changing out a motor on my Spec RX7 race car.
The motor going in is a 1982 model (allegedly) that came from an auto trans car.
I'm ready to drop it in except I need to mount the flywheel and clutch assembly.
I have flywheels for 1983, 1984, and 1985 engines.
They all weigh the same - 23 pounds.
It is my recollection that flywheels compatibility goes something like this:
1981 and 1982 (these may be different)
1983 only
1984 and 1985.
To the best of my knowledge, I need to get a 1982 flywheel to keep in balance.
It may be that a 1981 will work.
I'm pretty sure the 1983 and later will not work.
If the only difference is clutch size, I have both covered.
I am concerned about the counterweight built into the stock flywheels.
Does anyone know the real answer?

Tell him to look at Felixs site. Its in my sig. IIRC he needs to use an 81-82 flywheel and front counterweight. 83-85 rotor weights are different so c/weights and flywheels from these years are NOT useable in an 81-82. Also M'trix has flywheel info in their FAQ's.
Amur, you can also look at the Mazdatrix site to help identify which flywheel is whic. Url - http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/flywheel.htm
Good luck
