Exhaust stinks

'85 RX-7 12A doesn't really have visible smoke but driving in another car behind it I noticed that the exhaust is really foul smelling. It won't pass CA emissions testing. It seems to require a quart of oil per tank of gasoline. Do you think the metering pump is putting in too much oil?

I've read about blocking it off and mixing 2-stroke oil added to the gas instead. Seems to be a wide range of recommendations about the amount of oil to mix in.

uhhh. A quart per tank is too much. I ran like 5 tanks through my car while i had my metering pump and i never had to add oil. Maybe you have an oil leak also?????

You can premix and see if it still loses oil. Do a search for "premix" and youll find stuff.

A quart of oil every 200-250 miles sounds like a rotor housing dowell pin oil leak. I bet you have oil/dirt build up on the back of your rear license plate.

Sounds like you are running rich, and/or your cat. converter system is no longer working or removed from the car.

Yeah, it smells like it is running rich. No there is no dirt/oil build-up on the rear license plate. I suppose rebuilding the carb and setting the float drop to spec would help that problem. A dowel pin leak on the rotor housing sounds hard to find. Would spark timing affect this stinky problem?

One advantage of using so much oil - I never have to change it. The dipstick ALWAYS comes out with clean fresh oil. ;-)

At least change the filter now and then. Try direct fire too because it's always able to clean up the exhaust some.

Yeah, not running a cat or having one that's on the fritz will certainly make your eyes water. Ditto for running rich, but that would also be indicated by black smoke and ****-poor fuel economy.
