Question exhaust ports?

I am putting a used engine in my car until I can afford to rebuild the one that blew up. Question is....can I port just my exhaust ports while the engines together? I know chips will get in there and such but I was thinking maybe a porting tool and a shop vac? Is there any performance to gain by doing this since the intake ports will still be stock?

I don't think this would be a good idea. Besides I do not feel you will benefit any unless you can port the intake side as well.

What else have you done to your car? Putting a RB header and exhaust on and making sure you have a well tuned carb can really make these cars run well.

Shop vac won't work. You will need to have it perfectly lined up to be overlapped with the intake port to create the suction.

Not worth the likelyhood (very high) of destroying your engine. Even if you could keep the chips out of the engine (I don't think you can) you won't be able to do a good enough job to show any decent power gain. Shape and contour of the inside of the ports is the most important part.

Have rb intake/carb set up and header with exhaust.
Sounds like its not a good idea.

yeah, bad idea. you cant get in there to put a bevel on the port, so even if you get the chips out of there it'll die anyways

porting produces a HUGE and I mean HUGE amount of aluminum dust.

theres NO CHANCE of doing what you want and success

Don't touch your exhaust ports unless all you do with the car is drag. Porting will lower your torque and rotaries can't make enough due to their poor design...

its been summed up as not a good idea due to the shavings getting into the engine and ruining the engine not to mention the lack of a need for the porting.

Be careful, sarcasm like that has probably actually killed a few cars, and it DID destroy a 1993 Mustang Cobra on another forum once. The guy was new and he posted asking about how dirty his oil was and if there was a way to clean his engine so the new oil he put in wouldn't get dirty. Someone replied "Just run a hose into the crank case while the engine is idling, as long as you stay at idle it'll be fine, keep running it until the liquid coming out of the drain plug is clear!!!!! That'll totally work!!!! (some wacky sarcasm smiley face)" Everyone thought it was obvious he was joking and didn't mention the sarcastic post and the guy posted back saying that the engine won't start after doing the hose trick and what he did wrong and how to fix it. He destroyed that Cobra.

Guys like that don't deserve Cobras. If you can't figure out how to change your oil you need to stay off the road. Jiffy lube stays in business because people are dumb and or lazy. Everyone can find an extra $15 and 15 minutes of they're time every 3000 miles.

The point of that story is that he WAS trying to invest time learning and reading on a forum.I wouldn't call him dumb OR lazy, if you don't know something, you just don't know it, it's hard to think back on it with your knowledge because you just can't put your mindset back far enough to just not know something that trivial to you or I, but to him hes taking the right precautions to research. He didn't skip Jiffy lube to save money, he bought the Cobra, money wasn't the problem, he wanted to do it himself to get that ownership pride we have, and to maybe learn a thing or two. A little misunderstood harmless sarcasm ruined it all for him. A general rule of thumb for me is to not joke around with things that cost this much, especially when it belongs to someone else.

Haynes, FSM, or calling the dealership should have been the first steps the guy took. They're more credible sources then random internet forum users...

I didn't think of the hose trick.... maybe he could wash out the metal filings out of the rotor housing with the "ole hose trick".

Way more effective than just simply vaccuming out the shavings!!!
