Cool Exhaust nose difference??

I know this has been touched on in other posts but i cant seem to find a direct answer.

I have a 1980 that I will be putting a RB header on. Money is REALLY tight and Im not really sure if buying a mini presilenser is worth while.

How much louder is the header attached to the stock heat exchanger than my current bone stock exhaust? Im not the kind of guy that needs to make the entire city awair of my arival, nevermind my nabours and landlady.

Muffler is stock as well.

I dunno, but my 85 with header straight pipe to stock muffler is LOUD. I don't mind but my neigbors do, and my wife, and my boss.... I am going to try to put another muffler on it tomorrow and see if it will help the noise without hurting the power too much.

The heat exchanger is really restrictive, so you'll really be missing the benefits of the header unless you remove it. Once you remove it, you'll definately need the presilencer.

Oh and btw, you'll definately want to get rid of the stock muffler. It doesn't sound very good with a header system installed. Imagine an angry flock of hornets and move it up an octave, mix in some weedwacker and you'll have the sound produced by a RX-7 with a header and the stock muffler installed.

Not good. I drove mine for a year before I had the cash for a new muffler. It sucked.

A lot.

I can't emphasize this enough.

yeah, take off the heat exchanger, goto midas and buy there littlest glass pack (it's fits where the cat would) for under $30. cut and weld the brackets to the glasspack and there you go. nice and easy on and off.those glass packs quiet it down alot. don't know how long they will last, but my wifes is going on 6 nonths now.

The main reason for ME to change to a header is I have developed a few little exhaust leaks in and around the TR causing it to backfire more than I would like. I would like to fully benefit from the pre silencer but if it is not really necessary I don’t think I can afford it.

However, if the noise would be bothersome to me and others I suppose I will have to suck it up and spend the money.
