Exhaust/Muffler questions

So because of the accident I recently got into I need to have my muffler replaced and I figure I’ll get a Magnaflow because I want a performance upgrade. I went to a shop and they put it up on the lift, barely glanced under the car and proceeded to tell me how they were going to take out all three of my catalytic converters and replace them with two new ones. This was after about two seconds of looking at my car. Now, I don’t know much about exhaust systems but this does not sound right to me. They also didn’t want to sell me the Magnaflow, instead they were big on a Flowmaster. Then they hit me for $360.00. This also didn’t sound right. What’s up with these guy’s? Does this sound legit? How should I feel about the removal of my cats? I ‘m not sure about the relationship between the pre cat the cat and whatever the third one does. Does someone have a link to some good info about this so a novice like me can get up to speed? I'm waiting to have the work done until I know more about this.

If you want to keep emission legal you will need to keep your cats in, but if you are looking for horse power you will want them ont. I think the quickest, easiet way to go is with Racing beat replacement parts. They are not cheap, but bolt in and can raise horse power.

Search for racing beat exaust and you will get a ton of threads.

Good luck

If you're in Hollywood, California that means your will need to be emissions legal, keeping good and functional catalysts on there ( heh heh I love my header ). How in hell did he determine that your cats are bad and needed replacement by simply glancing at them? And if YOU want a Magnaflow exhaust on there then a Magnaflow is what you should get. They sound shady..I'd go to another shop.

I have a friend using flowmaster...mine is magnaflow and it's damn loud.

Both should be ok, however, you won't find you'll get that much performance from just a muffler.

I went 2.5" from the front, single hi-flow cat to a high-flow muffler and the performance gains were nominal. I didn't put an aftermarket header on (yet).

Look at grabbing a Racingbeat system...at least the header which I believe will give you the best bang for your buck.

It's probably a good idea to get your cats replaced anyways...unless they are new..they're probably clogged & restrictive.

$360 does seem a tad steep for cats & a muffler.

Are they at least stainless steel?
