Exhaust Considerations

I'm looking to repair the stock exhaust on my 1980. I'm keeping all the emissions stuff. I started making calls to shops ("Import Specialists") that seemed like they may have had some rx-7's come through over the years. Two places said they have actually worked on these cars. One guy said I have to be careful with what I put on it because too much back pressure could damage or blow out some engine seals. Is this true? From what I can tell, I need to replace the 1 inch pipe that goes from the reactor to the heat exchanger. Maybe a new muffler. I've been reading all the exhaust posts and am having a hard time coming to a conclusion. Most everyone simply says go with RB. I have no doubt RB is probably good. But on a stock setup, is there really no other choice? It's not always specified but my guess is that most of the folks that have had non-RB failures were not running a stock setup? I really don't want to spend the money if I don't have to. I would simply like to put a stock muffler back on 'cause there's no question it should work fine. Problem is the dealer wants $450 for it.

My advise is to find a custom shop that has good reputation and take the car out have them look at it and let them advise your best course of action.

The reason every one here sugests racing beat is because very few of us have original exhausts systems with the emmissions control equipment intacked.

All the parts should be avalable from a catalog so they shuld be able to get whatever you need.

Good luck

The main problem with my exhaust at this point is the 1 inch diameter pipe that goes from the thermal reactor to the heat exchanger. It is blown out at the 2 bends. It's either a bypass pipe or a recirculation pipe. Have not been able to track down the exact part name. The shops I talked to said they don't have pipe that small (can only go as small as 2"). I'm sure the part is expensive, so before I head out to the dealer does anyone have this part lying around?
Thanks.

I think the part you are describing is called the "air pipe" (according to the parts manual)
The mazda Part Number is 8871-40-740. The gasket for it to fit on the rear end is PN 8527-13-135A. Does not appear to be a gasket on the front end of the pipe. To confirm this is the part you are describing, I recommend you go to the mazdaformance.com website, under RX7, download the PDF. files of the factory parts manual for 79/80. The Adobe software to read this file (actually I think its 4 files for the whole car) is free and also on the site to download, and this is a great resource when you talk with the usual (not all boneheads at the dealer parts dept. I don't doubt the air pipe, if available, will be damned expensive. I have a clean spare off an 80 with 51K miles on it if your interested. Drop me a note at aull@alaska.net if interested...

As to the muffler, I think 99% of the Forum folks will recommend the Racing Beat PrimaFlo muffler as the replacement. It is beautifully made, sounds fabulous and is a direct bolt-in for your car. I have one. All due respect to Eriks85RX7, the Monza exhaust pieces have a rep as being crap. The PrimaFlo costs $232 last time I checked the Mazdatrix website (where I would recommend you go, not racing beat. The 'Trix guys treat you really well, price is the same). And should you ever decide to get a header/performance exhaust, the primaFlo is ready to go for this application.
Best of luck

OK heres my take after 20 years of working on Rotaries:

Find another mechanic! to much back pressre will not blow your seals, it will simply make less power. A wide open exhaust will not blow your seals, but You will blow your seals when you start romping on it continuously due to the Fun Factor and the sound of the wide open exhaust!

The Racing beat exhaust was designed as a lower restriction drop in replacement system for the RX-7, its emissions legal in cali if you use the complete catbak system, and it looks good, sounds great, and costs are similiar to the stock system.

that little stock airpipe system you are reffering to is a PITA, they are always rusting out, so get used to it. a imple brazed or welded in replacement pipe will work fine and dandy if you need to keep the stock emissions
