is this enough fuel?

well i pulled the main line going to the carb to see if i'm getting enough fuel. all i did was get in, turn the key, and guess what, IT ACTUALLY CRANKED AND RAN WELL FOR ABOUT 5 SECONDS then it died. in the picture is how much fuel came out. something is telling me it's the carbs fault my car still isnt running. uggh, i suck as a carb rebuilder.

I think the manual has specs for the amount of fuel is should flow in a certain time period...

If it has too much pressure it can actually push gas past the needle valves and cause the engine to flood out.
Has the carb be completly rebuilt. Needle valves and seats replaced, not just inspected?

COMPLETELY rebuilt. lol we flow benched it and all. it's weird. i just poured gas down the carb and it ran fine with the fuel line disconnected still until it used all the fuel. so could this be a pump issue?

Well the pic dont tell much. How long did it take to get that fuel in there? It should be a steady stream. And I cant tell for sure, but the fuel in that pic looks old. And back to square one, can you see the fuel in the sight window? Is the carb getting gas?

Specs say 1400cc per minute or more for flow.

that fuel is brownish. rusty gas tank and lines.

has the fuel filters been replaced, including the small ones in the carb fuel inlets?

well the car has been sitting for months because of carb issues i've pulled the tank and cleaned it before. that is just old gas. when the line is hooked up the sight glasses are a little under half full. if i just pour gas in the carb and crank it, then it runs perfectly smooth until the fuel is all burnt. ugh. this is odd.

sounds like fuel delivery not carb problems. check the pump, filter, pressure and check the rubber lines between the pump and the tank. I had a rotten one in there and car wouldnt run. pump was pulling air and gas but not enough to keep the carb happy.

Also just a question. Is your return line stock? Does it still have the restrictor in it? (the little silver thingie). And is it on correctly? If your pump is good then maybe its bypassing too much back to the tank. You could crimp it off or plug it temporarily to see if thats the problem. Also Heres a way out idea. Get a funnel where the outlet will fit into the fuel hose. Disconnect the fuel hose and set it up so the funnel will feed the carb. Fill the funnel with fuel, hold it higher than the carb and see if itll run like that. Dont forget to disable the fuel pump or youll splash fuel all over. Or get another piece of fuel hose and let the pump fill the funnel.

its' the pump. i had my neighbor carb expert come over and we checked it out. my pump isnt pumping jack sh%t. it's all sad and stuff; it should be filling about a quart a minute but it takes a minute to barely fill a 20ounce bottle. theres hardly any pressure. the carb is good. it's the pump. he said that i may have blown the fuse? is this a possibility? he also told me that we flow benched the carb at 9psi of gas and that if i put the holley pump on running 5psi it will hold it fine. i dunno though. lol

If he was actually an expert, he wouldn't suggest a blown fuse as the cause of low output.

...He also would'nt have suggested 9 psi into the carb fuel wise.

And just how did you "flow bench" your carb?

It would be the cause of [i]no[/] output.

9 psi is too much fuel pressure. So is five. You want 3.75-4.25.

How did you "flow bench" your carb?

Holy **** 9 psi? I run 5-7 psi at idle. Are you sure there is nothing restricting the amount of fuel your FP pumps? Maybe a clogged fuel line?

it's possible i guess, i'm gonna pull the line directly from the pump and see how it flows there. STERLING: he has a flow bench hooked up to a manifold looking thing that the carb fits on to. then he runs fuel in to the line and it circles back through. it's pretty sweet. before he rebuilt my carb he ran 9psi through it and it ofcourse filled the floats to the max and went all nutz. when he was done he ran 9psi through it and it was fine. i dunno what he did, but he said alot. he wasnt sure exactly of a fuse or what it could be just that he didnt want me to buy a new fuel pump before checking out all my options. he really is a carb expert, but that is about it. he owns a shop that does NOTHING BUT CARBS. lol, and he's done (according to him) atleast a hundred nikki's off of rx7's throughout the days. haha, what else would make my pump not pump enough fuel?

A blown fuse will kill power to the pump. You either have a weak/dying pump, a clogged fuel filter. clogged fuel lines, or a clog at the tank pickup. Yes, stay under 4psi please.

To check just the pump, get some fuel hose and 2 jars and some fuel. Disconnect the hoses from the pump, hook your hoses to the pump, stick the hoses into the jars and just see if it pumps fuel from jar to jar good.

Got a pic of the flowbench? Sounds like a wet flowbench.

i believe it is a wetflowbench. i'll grab a shot next time i'm down there. i'm pretty sure the pump is just friggin gone. too many high rev runs. after reading yaw's site about the stock fuel pumps i'm suprised it lasted this long. haha

i checked the voltage on the hot wire going to the pump. its only getting 6 volts. WTF could this be why it's not putting out enough fuel?

I had a problem shortly after I got my 84' GS kind of like that. The only thing was it wasn't getting any power. I checked the fuse and the connector and found nothing wrong. I just ran new lines that came on with the ign. It has worked fine ever scince.

Try what Rx7carl said with the jars and some leads comming off the battery and check it that way. I tested by bypassing the stock wireing first and the car ran fine then hooked it up to come on with the ignition after that.

The relay should be under the dash to the right of the whell. (Purdy sher)
You might do the "switch ignition on & off with yer head under there to hear the relay click" location test.

...Mmmm, uh- make sure she's in nuetral!
