Engine won't turn off; Main Relay???
Recently my 85 S with SP, Edelbrock carb etc. keeps running when I turn the key off. Kind of a pain in the tail, to say the least. Have to pull a fuse out to make it give up the ghost. If I turn the key to "off" position the tach kind of jumps a little but nothing else happens. Just recently the volt meter jumps when I use the turn signals. I've searched the threads but can't find much on this subject.
When I put this motor in (2 years ago) I installed the usual Carter fuel pump -no problems. My searching found mention of the Carter drawing alot of power causing the volt meter jumping with suggestions to rewire it through a relay from the battery.
I've tried looking along the ignition harness for rubbing wires and also pulling some of the relays in the engine compartment. The relays under the dash seem to require double jointed fingers at the very least...
Questions: Is the main power relay a prime canidate for this problem? It SEEMS like a relay sticking problem or maybe a crossed wire.
If so WHERE the hell IS it?? The Haynes diagrams are obscure as to location (and alot of things, it seems..)
Would appreciate some thoughts on this; it's starting to drive me crazy not to mention the safety factor.
Thanks!
Sanspistons for rotarys that just keep going... and going... and going.............!

My 83 s Did the same thing... it could be two things.. A relay up beside the drivers headlight it the only relay between the ignition and the coils, OR your ignition switch..

Thanks RRTEC but I already swapped ignition switches AND pulled the battery tray/ headlight relays to no effect. Maybe just pulling them isn't enough? Tried crossing the numbers over on these relays -nobody has them; is the junkyard the only source? If so then the "new" ones could have the same problem...

Sorry to keep bugging people but does anybody have any suggestions? If not, can anybody direct me to a thread that does? It's starting to drive me nuts...
Thanks again....

well the ghetto way to do it would just be to wire to switches to the coils so you can break the circuit without pulling the fuses. I would do that as last resort though.
