engine won't shut off

ok well i searched for this and apparently everyone is having starting issues, i am however having no starting issues, but my engine will not shut off with the key, one thing i've noticed is that the gauges like fuel and oil and temp all keep working even after i had taken the key all the way out and was holding it in my hand, what gives? the only thing that did shut off like it should was the aftermarket tach i have hooked up? any suggestions where to look?

FbDrift 07-13-09 11:05 PM

did anyone rewire the car? when you added the aftermarket tach did you mess with a bunch of wires?

84stock 07-13-09 11:17 PM

very secret trick grasshopper, now trust me, turn off the car, remove the key and "depress power window switch"........remember, trust me, and post your results

FbDrift 07-13-09 11:21 PM

what if he doesnt have power windows.

rxtasy3 07-13-09 11:37 PM

somehow there's 12v still going to the ignition system when the switch is off. here's what i'd try. with the engine running and the switch off, start pulling fuses one by one. when the engine stops, the problem is in that circuit. good luck.

i'd say your ignition switch is messed up electrically.

Grasshopper!

mazdaverx713b 07-14-09 09:56 AM

sounds like a faulty ignition switch. whats the deal with the power window switch? my curiosity is aroused

etizz 07-14-09 10:18 AM

well the ignition switch supposedly has been replaced and it looks new and i have receipts for its replacement

DivinDriver 07-14-09 10:22 AM

You can't see the ignition swaitch (the electrical part) without taking the steering surround off.

Are you sure you're not looking at a new ignition lock... which is a separate piece from the switch?

positive, my car never came with a steering surround lol, i hope the previous owner didn't pay midas like 250 bucks for a new lock cylinder only

i'm a bit skeptical to try this honestly, my car has had enough wiring problems in its day to make me comfortable to try this without fear of blowing something else up. i just got every other wiring issue sorted out it ever had thanks to this forum(or so i thought until this came up)

n0ferz 07-14-09 02:19 PM

wanna know too

Try it, no harm. Push the button and the engine will shut off!

84stock 07-14-09 02:35 PM

I had the same exact problem.......

Starfox07 07-14-09 02:50 PM

My guess is that because the p/w is switch power it will reset the entire circuit or something

*anxious to see results and explanation*

AcidAngel7477 07-14-09 05:56 PM

hmmmm...explain man.

:AA:

blackdeath647 07-14-09 06:26 PM

Unevolved 07-14-09 07:11 PM

I wanna know, come on OP. Just do it.

84stock 07-14-09 07:28 PM

Before you all jump at the ignition switch as the culprit, I changed that and it still had the same issue, alternator as well, same issue. Now push the damn button...
