Engine :What year *pics*

Hello!

Ive got hands on 12a , its suposed to be from a 71-72 rx 2/3 .

Some pics are attached .

And last , will this engine mate up to a 81 Fb tranny ? Or is the bolt pattern different on the pre 74 engines . If its a pre 74 that is .

Thanks in advance boys !

it may not be a "correct" assembly. it looks like 74-78 irons and 76-80 rotor housings.

the pre 73 engines are round where it says "mazda" on yours.

It would have a dual dizzy front cover if it was '72 or '73.

Also top mounted starter.

It has a crappy NO intermediate plate. Those have a stupid EGR exhaust port at the top (reason for the cover plate) and super small ports. Reach your finger up inside and feel how short they are.

The oil pan looks backwards.

The dizzy is a points type.

The rear plate is a'76-'78 R5 casting with 18 tension bolts and 5 (freeze) plugs. My guess is 1978 because it's got a BSP plug in the oil pressure hole, like my bro's '78 RX-4 13B.

The intermediate plate is nitrided but the rear plate is not. The year spread is from as early as '76 to as late as some time in the early '80s. I didn't see anything from '71-'73 or '74-'75 in those pics.

It will bolt up to your '81 tranny. Make sure to get a 215mm disc and pressure plate for that ol' 30 pound flywheel.

Just make sure that the oil pan matches the chassis of whatever vehicle you're dropping it into.

Hey, I just ported one of those 18 tension bolt R5 rear plates today. The iron felt softer than the later nitrided stuff in some ways, and harder in others. It uh felt/cut different.
