NC Engine Swap or rebuild????

I have a first gen combustion side gasket blown white smoke out the exhaust none in the oil. Car has been sitting for about a year.....started up with some priming need to rebuild/clean carb. I have been thinking about throwing a small block in it ....but hate to leave the original. 82 125k inside is good needs paint. I think rebuild or swap cost will be about the same …..any ideas

how long did you let it run? sometimes if a 12A sits for a good long time, the seals wont sit right, also there could be a lot of moisture in the chambers/vac system. try pouring about an once of Marvel Mystery oil or sea foam down the primaries, then rotate the engine a few time by hand (ignition off) and let it sit for a day. then let it warm up to operating temp and see if the amount of smoke changes, or if the color changes. dont try to drive it, because if it is a blown coolant seal you could damage your rotor, housing, apex seals, or even warp your entire engine if its not cooling properly. never let it overheat, keep a close eye on the temp guage while its warming up and if goes a bit more than half, and keeps climbing shut it off (assuming your gauge works correctly).

I am by no means an expert, but i know the last 12A i had smoked like i banshee after I first got it started. took about 30 minutes of run time for it to clear up. there are a lot of guys on here with a lot of tricks for rotaries, but more info is needed.

V8 swap will cost way more and probably never get done. My vote is on rebuilding the original. Why? It's strictly mechanical. Mazda already did all the engineering. And it will still be an RX-7. But some people like doing things the hard way.
