is it white smoke, blue smoke, does it smell like burning oil or sweet like coolant? is it like ALOT of smoke (enough to be embarrassing) or just a little?

a little blue oil smoke is probably okay, I don't think any of the RX-7s I've had didn't smoke a little on a cold startup... quite a bit of any kind though is abnormal and probably a bad thing

You'll especially get a big puff if you chocke the car during ignition. Unless it's absolutely necessary, I prefer not to use the choke because my neighbors give me the evil eye. Remember, 7's burn oil with their fuel so I always assume it's that residue getting blown out that drips down into the intake after shutoff.
