Engine runs, but won't start without aid

Needs some help on a nagging problem. (I wrote this once already and Yahoo lost it, argh)

My engine will only start when using starter fluid (ether). Once it starts, it runs fine. Here's what I know that is working:

* When cranking, I get fuel from the incoming fuel line. My guess is that means the fuel pump is okay.

* The check valve in the return line is working

* The choke is working normally and releases once the engine warms up.

After I've run the engine and shut it down, it won't start again. What could it be? My cousin suggested replacing the fuel pump cut-off relay. However, if I'm getting fuel at the incoming line while cranking, I'm thinking the relay must be working.

I'm stuck. I'm thinking there must be a problem in the vacuum lines or ecu circuitry, of which I know nothing?

Ideas?

Thanks,

By the way, the ECU dont do jack didly **** other than emissions. Unless its a 13b GSL-SE?

I would see if the cat is causing too much backpressure. The more people I talk to the more i'm finding this to be a common problem on older cars. Espesially when all other troubleshooting does'nt work.

Jason,
Have your cousin watch in the barrels of the carb as you pump the gas. Is there gas going into the engine? Actually, you can do this under the hood without help.

How far are you from Topeka?
