engine rebuild assist piece?

I'm gathering some information before I reassemble my engine for the first time. I have read in the manual to place an "assist piece" under the apex seals before installing them. What is the function of this piece. My Mazda dealer isn't even aware that they exist.

I dont think they make them anymore. It is un-necessary anyway, thats why I think. Its to help to corner of the apex sit correctly upon assembly IIRC. I just use a drop of crazy glue to hold it to the apex seal so it doesnt go "bing" and fly away when you fit the next housing on top of it. Believe me, thay have a tendancy to do that, sometimes into the motor so you dont know you did it. Watch them carefully when you put the housing down on top of it.

I had them jumping all over the place...one time i had one jump from the rear rotor housing all the way down to the front end plate when assembling it. Imagine how that felt.

heyy i dont know how old this thread is, sorry if its too old to bring up, but ****, i cant even tell you guys how frustrated i was this afternoon, trying to put my motor together, long story short is that i had to pull it all apart buy some crazy glue then scrape all the reassembley caulking off of my motor and new seals, i wish i had known, and yes that ting ting noise burns the devil inside me too,

just goes to show how much usefull information is on this site, wish i had done my researche before figureing the assist piece is not neccisary, well im out to go and buy some superglue,

I assembled my first engine with wheel bearing grease (recommended by Lynn E. Hanover et al) yesterday afternoon. The engine went together smoothly and quickly without the horrid ting sounds.

I was told by a local engine builder to use Vaseline. Keeps things in place better, burns off quite well and helps as a sealing agent. I smear the stuff all over the surfaces of everything I am going to store to prevent rusting too.

ting, ting, tingitti...

I use Hylomar. each tube last enough for two engines. Craxy glue has help in more than one motor...
