well i bought my bros rx7 (83 gsl). he put a new 12a in it and it drives great...the engine that was in there he said i can have. The problem with that engine was that it has like no power and it was very sluggish. I plan on rebuilding it, but before i do anything im not too expierenced with rotarys...what could cause the engine to have no power? He tried everything to fix it but nothing. I thought i heard some where of when rotary engines are shot, they have the same problems. Is that true?

 

Could be low compression, or a stuck/broken apex seal. Usually though, people are too quick to blame an engine when it is a carb or ignition issue. Take out the top spark plugs and rotate the engine by hand. See how it sounds as it releases the compression for starters.

a bad rotary will idle like *** at 1500... think gasoline lawnmower on diesel bad idle

no power points to ignition or carb/fuel flow or plugged kitties.
fuel and carb are most popular causals, followed by ignition/blown motor (ive gone through 1 motor, but no ignitors.. go fig)

do a tune up.. how does the engine display no power? pained squishy revving through to redline? kitties
odd bogging, backfires and crazy tach? ignition
no way in hell of getting the engine past 4k? carb -> secondaries
acceleration is followed by stalling? fuel flow
just bad performance? check everything above.
