ENGINE FIRE FIRE!!!! saved by a seat cushion!!!!
FIRE FIRE,
My car had a short circuit in the wiring harness at the emissions rat nest by the alternator. I was testing the car today at the track and the carbs, brakes everything was working wonderfully, all of the sudden SMOKE!! and no FIRE EXTINGUISHER how DUMB of me...so I grabbed a little cushion I had for back support and used my bare hands to pull the wiring out. I got molten plastic on one of my fingers and took the fire out...
Geez it was scary...the fuel vent line was shooting out flames....
I should have recorded all that on video.
Moral of the story....have a fire extiguisher handy even when not racing.
Another RX7 saved....

Hell, just hook up a Wet NOS with a fire exstingusher nozzle and aim it at the flames! Actually DON'T DO THAT!
I always keep a exstingusher in my cars after witnessing a couple car fires. One was put out by me,(not my car), but my quick thinking, and no damage amazingly, just a car wash under the hood was all that was nessessary and a battery since his was leaking and he put a bookbag around it to contain the leak?!!
..... which caused the fire. (WHAT A IDIOT!!!)
Another time I saw a caprice infront of me suddenly smoking and then they pulled over and they got out and the car was FULLY engolfed in flames less then a minute later. NO fire exstengisher and nothing to put it out with. IF I had one then I would of stepped in and gave them a hand, then charge them $20 for the usage of it(cost to buy it) But after that incident, I knew it was clear that every car should have one, including myself, despit carmakers not making it standard equipment.

I think now you need to see why it started a fire anyways, everything in the car is suppose to be fused, in the event of a dead short, it should have blown the fuse and stopped the flow of current instantly ...
But good job saving the car, I had one catch on fire a LONG time ago, and wasnt anything to stop it...

yeap man it's weird it was the emissions harness, two black and white cables touched ground somehow and it sparked the fire. No fuses were blown....so weird. I don't trust fuses anyways they never blow when you need them to blow. I found the problem right away fixed it and kept on racing just with a nastily burnt finger. I suggest to everybody that removes the rats nest to cut all those wires and get rid of potential fire hazards like leaving the charcoal canister vent line open...remember to plug it.

Wow, that's kinda scary. Nice job saving the car, that's pretty impressive. I could just imagine getting caught up in the heat of the moment and tearing into the burning wires, arms flailing, screaming, just crazy stuff.
Think I'll pick up a fire extinguisher tomorrow. Are the little ricer ones decent enough?
