Engine dropped dead at 30 MPH
Glad to hear it's running again. And thanks for posting again, it adds to our collective diagnostic lore.
Reliability should be good, but remember it's a used car with high mileage. I bought my 83 new and with 116k it's very reliable. Last year I bought a used 85 with 49k and it's been very reliable. I've owned several american, japanese, brit and italian cars, and the 7 seems the most reliable to me. Plus, I love the way the 116k motor hums so smoothly, compared to the lumpy thrashing noise of boingers.

Hmm, my 85 GSL pumps gas when the key switch is on, continously, not just for a second or two. Or at least I can hear the pump operating. All the emissions crap is in place. I was looking at this as the possible cause of engine flooding on my engine, and in doing a search I found this thread, which surprised me as I thought my fuel pump was supposed to operate like that normally.
Hey guys - SE's with Fuel Injection are the only 84/85 that don't run the pump unless the engine is turning (cranking or running). This is because the higher pressure of an EFI fuel system would cause injector 'leak-down' that results in flooded chambers, and flooded engines that won't start.
Carb'd cars will run the fuel pump anytime the ignition switch is in the ON position, as opposed to the RUN positionl
EFI cars will only run the fuel pump when the engine is cranking or running.
84/85 NON-SE cars still have carbs and still run fuel pumps all the time. 84/85SE cars are EFI. HTH,

OK, it is running again. The problem turned out to be the relay that controls the fuel pump. The fuel filter was replaced first but did not solve the problem.
The Haynes manual on this car covers the years 79-85. The main section on fuel in the front of the book says the fuel pump should run with the iginition switch ON. The schematic diagram shows the fuel pump connected directly to the ignition switch ON position. As an afterthought, Haynes put in a section on "newer models" in the back. It does say that 84's and 85's have a relay that prevents the pump from running unless the engine is running. They do show a jumper location to test the fuel pump with the engine not running.

Congrats on the purchase BTW.
