if you're brave enough to download a 15Mb pdf

Rx7carl 11-21-02 02:51 PM

Heh, I changed the shortcut already! :p:

inittab 11-21-02 02:57 PM

Rx7carl - From what I've seen, it looks excellent! Even though I haven't read the whole thing, I do have one suggestion. It looks cool but instead of white letters on black, make it black on white instead. It'll be much friendlier to print out and reference when doing the work.

Dude! That's some awesome work you've done there!

Rx7carl 11-21-02 02:59 PM

That version is free to the whole world. To help offset our costs and to help fund future tutorials, we're asking for donations to get the printer friendly versions. I think thats a fair deal, whaddya think?

inittab 11-21-02 03:00 PM

absolutely!!

hehe..... I didn't see your last page. :)

inittab 11-21-02 03:04 PM

You could work with 82transam to make a Mechanical Secondaries tutorial next.

Keaponlaffen 11-21-02 03:08 PM

looks like this could be useful....

I agree, a mechanical secondaries tutorial should be made, perhaps to stop some of the weekly posting of "How do I make mechanical secondaries?".

very cool though Rx7Carl

Jeff

pratch 11-21-02 03:09 PM

Yeah, what Carl said. :D

We'll do the donation thing for a while so that we can fund the 3-4 tutorials we have on our list. I've already made the print-friendly version so after a donation, we can send you the goods. :D

Additionally, if there's enough desire, I can make a low-res picture version that should weigh in at closer to 5 megs, but I figured that a 56k'er can download the full thing in a few hours so we had most folks covered.

Rx7carl 11-21-02 03:11 PM

There u are! I was wondering how long before you showed up here! LOL

Rx7carl 11-21-02 03:14 PM

Guys and Gals...Tell us what u want tutorials of and we'll see about it.

pratch 11-21-02 03:15 PM

You know me - always stylishly late :D

Hi everyone here - send money, we'll do cold-air intake, electric fan and many more :D

pratch 11-21-02 03:36 PM

Wow, posts get bumped low in a hurry in this joint :D

*bump*

alien_rx7 11-21-02 03:58 PM

Excellent Tutorial. Looking forward to many more great ones to come out. Beer and Parts fund is a great idea! Once I get rid of a few of my parts I'll send over some beer money ;)

Rx7carl 11-21-02 05:24 PM

I'd like to hear ideas for future tutorials from everyone. No super heavy or $$$ stuff like adding turbos and such. We'd like to start with some good solid basic 1st gen mods/repairs to supplement the FSM.

pratch 11-21-02 05:26 PM

Then of course, if a couple hundred folks donate (or we get one really nice philanthropist), we can go for the turbos, 13B swap out, etc. Eventually, we'll make this puppy hardbound and go global baby! :D

Okay, perhaps not, but one may always dream, eh? :D

Rx7carl 11-21-02 05:34 PM

:withstupi :werd:

pratch 11-21-02 05:43 PM

That's it Carl, let's change the next tutorial into "how to lay the beat down on your friends":boxing:

:D

Rx7carl 11-21-02 07:45 PM

A little touchy huh? :stickpoke

Ok, Mechanical secondaries on the list. GIMME MORE!!!!

pratch 11-21-02 07:46 PM

Mechanical Secondaries
Cold Air Intake
Ricing your interior lighting without being silly...

pratch 11-22-02 06:24 AM

It's a new day... Time to bump.

pratch 11-22-02 08:06 AM

Actual content this time.

There seems to be some confusion as to whether or how to get the printer-friendly version. Trust me when I say that whatever donation you offer for the print-friendly version will be MUCH MUCH cheaper than the 2 new black ink tanks you'll need to print up the standard tutorial at a resolution that still shows the pictures well.

Two black ink tanks: about $40 minimum.

Minimum donation? 6 pack Killians Irish red ($6) (and actually, there is no minimum donation - $5 is great if you have it, so is $20)

Seems like a simple enough equation to me :D

I can't access the page, something about a url not found?

pratch 11-22-02 01:55 PM

Odd - unless your ISP doesn't refresh their DNS listings but once every 6 months, you should see it.

Give it a try now? It just loaded on an off-network machine here.

The "_" underscore is actually an invalid DNS character. They must be using a freak'n Micky$oft DNS server because everyone knows Micky$oft does not follow the rules. :( *sigh* I'd suggest to the person who maintains the DNS to chang the domain zone record and use a "-" dash instead. A dash is a valid character. Don't ask me how I know all this crap.

pratch 11-22-02 02:09 PM

Apache allows lots of non-standard things. The site itself, however is being hosted using OS X server with the pdf downloads shuffled to a 'nix box to allow greater stability during these nice bandwidth using times. :D

try that puppy. if it doesn't work, then I must surmise that your computer is not happy. ;)

Cheers

DONNA 11-22-02 03:47 PM

with such an outstanding write up i kinka hate to even ask this question,,,(maybe just wanted to bump the thread again),, but i am assuming that this removal means that you dont have a cat conv on your car, or it will destroy the cat true/false,,,,and, can u just remove the air pump and install block off plate and leave the nest in place hooked up,,or does it have to come off if the a/p is removed,,,,,and you certainly will not pass emmisions test with it gone true/false,, i have no cat but the rats nest seems to be working ok, but would like to remove the a/p anyway,,,

pratch 11-22-02 03:52 PM

I'll wait for Carl to answer the real technical end, but if your concern about leaving the nest in place is for A/C, etc - don't worry about it. The tutorial car (mine) still has usable A/C, Cruise Control in addition to the vacuum lines to the dizzy.

ASEmaster 11-22-02 04:04 PM

some tutorial suggestions:

1. water/oil cooler to air/oil cooler swap
2. electric fan installation
3. standard diff to LSD swap
4. any other swap/repair thread that repeatedly shows up every week...

pratch 11-22-02 05:21 PM

Good suggestions - the electric fan is already on our list.

Keep them coming :D

White84SE 11-22-02 05:28 PM

A little bit of help for the guys who want to do this... I've got a part number list for ya.. if you've got a NAPA store nearby (and really, who doesn't? LOL), take this list in, and they'll give you everything you need...
NAPA Helts and Hose Product Line
NBH H451 (5/32" vacuum hose)
NBH H173 (5/32" Fuel hose)
NBH H455 (5/16" vacuum hose)
NBH 3L220 (The belt if you've got a double pulley, skip it)

Balkamp Product Line
BK 660-1695 (1/2" vacuum cap)
BK 660-1696 (9/16" vacuum cap)
BK 715-1815 ( Assortment, has the t-fittings in it)
BK 715-1803 (5/32" vacuum plugs. Get two, package has 5 in it.)
BK 765-2682 (Hylomar gasket sealer)

There ya go.. didn't include the bolts, but they're easy to get.. total cost for me was $20.45, but I get a discount... have fun..

Thanks for the compliment DONNA. I've heard that about the cats too. Honsetly, I've done 2 of my cars and didnt have this problem. But I only drove with the cats still in for a couple of months each time. I would like to know if anyone has hard facts on this as the tutorial is always subject to revision and I can add a note if necessary. The intent of this is to facilitate the common mods everyone does and this seems to be a stopping point when they get to mods like headers and such.

You can just remove the a/p but then most of the other stuff becomes redundant and inoperative so why not do it right? No you will NOT pass emissions, hence the many references that are anti-tree hugger LOL. And the "racing purposes only" disclaimer at the beginning.

Rx7carl 11-22-02 07:43 PM

Thanks White84SE.

Stripgear 11-22-02 07:53 PM

Donna,

If you remove any emissions equipment, your cat needs to come off or it will most likely overheat and melt.
After your cat is off you may remove just the air pump if you like.

Carl,

Your carb needs a vent. When you disconnect the vent solenoid and leave the solenoid in place, under certain conditions you can produce a positive pressure in the bowl and run rich or flood the engine. I had this problem until I removed the vent solenoid and made a plate for it.

Rx7carl 11-22-02 07:57 PM

I'd like to know why the cat would melt? Do you know what causes that?

It still has the stock vent solenoid hooked up. It will still get 12VDC regardless of the stuff removed in the tutorial.

Stripgear 11-23-02 11:32 AM

I'd like to know why the cat would melt? Do you know what causes that?
Most of the emissions stuff (shutter valve, acv, etc) are designed to improve combustion efficiency and lower the amount of unburned hydrocarbons that gets to the cat. If you start removing this stuff, the cat will see more unburned fuel that it has to burn. This leads to higher internal temps, which can cause the cat to fail.

Very good!:D

Rx7carl 11-23-02 11:54 AM

Ok, now I'm REALLY confused. So set me straight. My understanding is as follows. Air is added to burn fuel in the cat. Like an oxy acytelyene torch, you add oxy to make the flame hotter. Or with combustion mixture, lean is hot, rich is cold. So with this extra fuel in the cat without extra oxy to burn it, wouldn't it run cooler?

Stripgear 11-23-02 04:53 PM

Carl,

If you lower the charging efficiency too much you will get a misfire. In a misfire, you will have plenty of oxygen to burn the fuel in the cat. The rotary engine has a problem with this on decel which is the reason for the shutter valve. See this post.https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=100433

Stripgear 11-23-02 05:01 PM

Also, the rotaty engine has a unique problem that adds a lot of unburned fuel and oxygen to the cat, the 3-3 misfire. see my post toward the bottom of this page.https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...threadid=19403

Rx7carl 11-24-02 02:49 PM

Damn, where do you get all this cool engineering stuff?

Yzkiley 12-15-02 06:22 PM

great tutorial but what about the after burner control valve. Where do u run the vacuum line to and what if I block it off will it be ok.

Rx7carl 12-15-02 07:07 PM

I dont follow. Can you be more specific? Maybe give a page # on the tutorial so I can help you.

Any reason why you bumped this almost nine-year-old thread with nothing useful?

Because the tutorial, even after all these years, is still "friggin' awesome"?

We may not have gotten around to anything after the ICAI tutorial, and I now live 900 miles away from Carl, but that doesn't make the content any less valid.

My eldest is approaching the age where she's old enough to drive, and she's asked for my 7. I'm torn between getting her a different 7 and having her do the work with me, or, because I know the history of this one, letting her do some work on it and passing the torch.

See, I'd rather SHE get a good, known working car where I know the issues, than buying one and feeling compelled to tear it down. Of course, if I get her a different one, perhaps more tutorials will show up eventually...

(and yes, I basically just bumped an almost nine-year old thread - Oops)

1) what happened to Carl?
2) nobody should get flack for reviving an old thread, if it didn't need brought up again then the thread should have been locked...
3) i see thread revival a lot on this site, the mods are pretty easygoing. i think that's cool.
