emissions problems

Hi
Does anyone here have any suggestions for how to cut down on high level carbon emissions.
What to alter or change in the engine or carburator so as to improve what comes out back muffler.
I have 1984 RX-7 145,000 miles. Runs great.
but the state inspectors here in Texas have instituted higher standards for older cars to pass emissions test before new sticker can be issued.
I have already changed spark plugs, which only made the car run even better, but still no luck on improving the emissions.
Thanks for this great site.

Which of the three carbon gasses are causing you to fail? HC, CO or CO2. I'm going to assume CO for now. I would try adjusting the mixture screws on the carb, checking the cap and rotor on the distributor and output voltage of the leading coil, and the air pump. Having dead cats can also cause high emissions, but I would go after the cheapest parts first.

Make sure your ACV is operating correctly. You want air coming out of the split pipe to the cat in large amounts. Mine is shot (air going straight to the carb) so I took that hose and hooked it up to the cat, dropped my HC's by 400 and everything else too. Comment when done was, Wow never seen one of these do so well. Simply put by another member- "The solution to polution is dilution". You cant make em run more efficient so you dump air into them to dillute the gasses.
