Emission test results
Emission test results
Thought it would be nice to compare emission results with other RX-7s. Hopefully others will post their test numbers.
Here are my results for an '84 GSL-SE with original stock equipment tested in Texas:
50% hp/15 mph (rpm 1944)
-----------------------------------
HC-ppm 90 (limit 260)
CO-% 0.10 (limit 1.47)
CO2-% 14.4 (no limit)
O2-% 0.6 (no limit)
NOx-ppm 192 (limit 2058)
Dilution-% 15.4 (limit > 6)
25% hp/25 mph (rpm 2108)
-----------------------------------
HC-ppm 72 (limit 252)
CO-% 0.23 (limit 1.63)
CO2-% 14.7 (no limit)
O2-% 0.2 (no limit)
NOx-ppm 211 (limit 1877)
Dilution-% 14.9(limit > 6)
FYI: Here's how they perform the test.
Vehicle Emission Test Equipment
Acceleration Simulation Mode (ASM-2 test)- An emissions test for vehicles Model Year 1995 and older that uses a dynamometer (a set of rollers on which a test vehicle's tires rest) which applies an increasing load or resistance to the drive train of a vehicle, thereby simulating actual tailpipe emissions of a vehicle as it is moving and accelerating. The ASM-2 is comprised of two phases:
(A) The 50/15 mode-in which the vehicle is tested on the dynamometer simulating the use of 50% of the vehicle's available horsepower at a constant speed of 15 mph
(B) The 25/25 mode-in which the vehicle is tested on the dynamometer simulating the use of 25% of the vehicle's available horsepower at a constant speed of 25 mph

2004 Results (1st year with S4 Turbo Engine)
Ran from the gas station fill-up to the test with a slightly lighter premix ratio of about 175:1 (15 gal gas in 11 oz oil) which is pretty light on the premix oil. Drove low rpm < 4k) to the test just to be safe. Probably didn't need to fuss with it but this was my first sniffer test with the turbo swap. After the test I put in the rest of the oil to take me back down to 125:1 premix ratio.
I used 93 octane gas and Penzoil TC-W3 synthetic premium plus 2-stroke oil for premix.
My configuration was as follows: Stock port S4 T2 engine, Rtek 1.7 ECU with 720 secondaries, Porsche 944 FMIC, Corksport 3" --> 2-1/2"downpipe, 2-1/2" Bonez turbo-flo cat, RB Powerpulse muffler (full 2-1/2" exhaust), K+N filter. (posted cause sigs change over time)
Here's an summary of my test results:
50% hp/15 mph (rpm 1910)
-----------------------------------
HC-ppm 108 (limit 194)
CO-% 0.12 (limit 1.1)
CO2-% 14.5 (no limit)
O2-% 3.3 (no limit)
NOx-ppm 15 (limit 1504)
Dilution-% 14.62 (limit > 6)
25% hp/25 mph (rpm 2102)
-----------------------------------
HC-ppm 93 (limit 189)
CO-% 0.27 (limit 1.21)
CO2-% 14.4 (no limit)
O2-% 3.3 (no limit)
NOx-ppm 8 (limit 1374)
Dilution-% 14.67(limit > 6)
Pretty dam good results alright!
p.s. This was one BIG design goal that was successfully achieved. Gotta admit I was a little worried.

2005 Results (2nd year with S4 Turbo Engine)
Yea, just got back from getting my car inspected which includes a dyno type emissions test--PASSED with no problems.
Again, this year I ran a lighter premix, about 8 oz to 13 gallons.
I used 89 octane gas and Super Tech TC-W3 2-stroke oil for premix.
My configuration was as follows (same as last year): Stock port S4 T2 engine, Rtek 1.7 ECU with 720 secondaries, Porsche 944 FMIC, Corksport 3" --> 2-1/2"downpipe, 2-1/2" Bonez turbo-flo cat, RB Powerpulse muffler (full 2-1/2" exhaust), K+N filter. (posted cause sigs change over time)
Here's an summary of my test results:
50% hp/15 mph (rpm 1885)
-----------------------------------
HC-ppm 165 (limit 194)
CO-% 0.18 (limit 1.1)
CO2-% 14.4 (no limit)
O2-% 0.7 (no limit)
NOx-ppm 19 (limit 1504)
Dilution-% 14.58 (limit > 6)
25% hp/25 mph (rpm 2153)
-----------------------------------
HC-ppm 149 (limit 189)
CO-% 0.29 (limit 1.21)
CO2-% 14.4 (no limit)
O2-% 0.7 (no limit)
NOx-ppm 16 (limit 1374)
Dilution-% 14.69(limit > 6)
Coming Up!!! Next year I hope to run with full Megasquirt control of fuel/ignition AND emissions.

cool, its actually not hard to make these pass smog....
my gsl-se passed the ca test with headers and a cat, dont have the numbers in front of me but it was something like 22ppm hc @low speed and the rest were zero's
