LOL! I just got that jays83gsl. LOL!

You are right about that, didn't even notice that. Ok well not sure how that will go but I might ask them if I can buy the stuff and do the work my self and spend $150.00 and then take my recipts to the Emission person to see if it will be ok, but I dout that will let me do that. So, I am not sure if is a good idea and maybe I can just spend $150.00 having the Emession specialist do the work. Like that I can say I spend $150.00 dollar on the work give me my darn passing paper. lol

let me give you a number for someone to talk to in Washington... his name is Mark Moses, and he is the most honest, trustworthy guy i've ever dealt with, he has done much for me to fix my cars, and his prices are fair, and he will never throw you for a loop... his shop is called Mt. Peak Automotive, and he specializes in rotary engines, but can do just about anything else that has to do with cars...
give him a call at 866-825-1170, he will help you, and it will not cost a lot. i think he replaced my brake master cylinder in my 2nd gen rx7 for about 150ish bux. he's also done motor installs and pulls for me, and he currently owns my last 2nd gen... do yourself a favor and give him a call... he lives out in enumclaw

Get the cat checked first, any muffler shop can tell you if it is working or not. The #1 cause of not passing a smog on a carb rx7 is the cat as long as everything else is ok. With your
numbers your showing from your smog, you have a 95% chance that it is not working. I have smogged at least 30 rx7's over the last 20 years. rx7doctor

Well, if his ACV wasn't working, wouldn't that be as good a chance for it not passing?

Don't sweat the $150 limit... You'll blow through that with the cat. Hey if you have a trustworthy mechanic that knows rotaries too then consider yourself blessed. We have a place in Calgary that's decent too, but they're pretty few and far between.

Great, Thanks! Elysian,.. and everyone else. This is a great community.

I am going to call them up and talk to them and see what they tell me. One question I had for rx7doctor is, how can I tell if is the cat? Is there any way that I can tell on my own if is the cat?

I know I did smoke a bit yesterday when waiting for the test and I didn't see that before. I am wondering if that have to do cause I need a Tune-up or if is the cat?

To riofrio, what is a ACV?

hehe true Felgar,

ACV - Air Control Valve. One of its functions is to pump fresh air into the cat, to dilute the exhaust products. If the cat doesn't receive fresh air, the HC's and COs would definitely shoot up. I'm currently not passing emissions here in Nashville, (HC - 2300 ppm!), and I'm just about to test my ACV, I hope that's the main problem.

oh i c, yea, that could also be my problem as well. Dose a Tune-up fix that or do I have to adjust something in the car in order to make it work better?

Is this something a machanic have to do or that I can do?

Well, the Haynes' Manual gives step-by-step instructions on how to test the ACV and the air pump (which obviously needs to work properly as well in order to get dilution). I've never done it before, so I'm just gonna try to follow the manual. And no, a tune-up does not take care of these. The other easy thing you can do is test the variable resistor by the Air Flow Meter, the one that adjusts the richness of the air/fuel mixture. This is also in the Haynes' manual and all you need is a multi-meter.

You may also want to try Pep Boys. If you can't find it anywhere, go ebay.

Check Autozone. Every Autozone I've ever been to has the first gen Haynes in stock.

TEsting of cat

To properly test the cat for function you need an infrared temp sensor that checks
for the inlet and outlet temp, the outlet should be higher after it does its job. The
purpose of fresh air into the cat is to raise the temp to burn offf any excessive fuel
that was not burnt in the motor. Any good muffler shop can test you cat and usually do so for free. Remember Hc"s are unburned fuel, causes are bad plug,
bad ignition wires, faulty cap or rotor, all these attribute to unburned fuel.
A engine running too lean will cause a misfire also. Still the #1 cause of high Hc
readings for emmisions is a faulty catalytic converter. #1 always is to make sure
all tune-up components are in good working order, the air filter element is clean
and the engine is not running too cold. Make sure the acv is working and fresh air is getting to the converter and cannot return upstream due to a bad air exhaust
check valve. rx7doctor
