electrical guidance

I am trying to update my 1979 RX-7 to electronic distributor, full time trailing, one wire alternator and 2gen fuse link box.
I have a few of the write ups from the RX7 club archives but I have a few questions.
The fuse box and distributor seem clear enough but the format for the wire diagrams is a bit different than I am used to. I have the electronic distributor sub harness.
The wire diagram shows two splices in the alternator output wire. Are these buried in the harness? The alt output starts as a black wire but the connection to the fuse link box is white/red.
The regulator is the larger box on the drivers side fender just in front of the firewall, correct? The wire diagram for the regulator shows outputs to the alternator warning light and the choke relay. What can be done to retain these functions? Also Will I lose the voltmeter function (the tach works as a volt meter until you start the car) Might it be just as well to install a full time volt meter?
How do the part time ignition relay and short relay work and how do I disable/remove them? I think they are the relays mounted behind the drivers side headlight, but it is not clear to me how they work.
It looks like I will need to unwrap a major part of the harness to clean up the wiring properly, correct? I don't want to just cut off or tape the ends of unused wires.
Any "how to" and/or pictures or links to guidance on any of these concerns will be welcome.
