electrical/alternator problems...

i recently installed a rebuilt 13B engine on my GSLSE and went with a carb. did everything as per gruntled.com's info. but ever since i got the car running my alternator heats up as much if not more than the radiator.
the battery is a optima red top(its actually orange, but i asked for a red top and the numbers match). when the car is running it looks as if the alt is not charging properly. the volt meter lingers just above 12V. When hooked up to a battery tester, the battery is on the low side and the alt just above where it should be charging around 13 to 13.5V. when the tester is hooked up to the alt it reads around 14.5 to 15V.
i did swithch batteries and the alt seemed to charge it better, but it still got very hot.
i also ran the car off the alt(no bat) and it ran smoother and noticeably stronger than when the battery is connected.

i have a hard time starting the car and the battery tends to drain if its sitting for over a day.

does anyone have any idea as to where i should start looking into?

thanks

Try a ground from the negative battery terminal to the alternator bracket, can't hurt.

the alt needs power to make power. make sure thepower wire isn't grouned out near the alt. it could be grouned causing the battary to loose charge and the alt to get the power from it being grounded.

if that doesn't help. get a new alt. sounds like that one might have a one of the carbon links for the coils busted or something like that. you can take you're alt to the local auto shop and get a rebuilt one for lik $100 then get a core charge back of $25. making you're bill like $75 or so.

My car seems to never be getting a good charge according to my voltometer - 11volts usually, sometimes it'll go up to 13 but VERY rarely, the charge just kind of lingers from 11 volts to 12... but the battery never goes dead from sitting, even if i listen to the cd player (i have a small amp as well) for about an hour or so while working on my car...
