electric problem.....

Hello,

I am in the middle of a stereo instal in my '85 GSL. So, I wanted to replace the lights in the A/c control (some are burned out), bought several LED's to fit....well, the old incandescent bulb was flickering BEFORE. Anyways, I changed the bulbs....they work BUT go dark when I put the parking lights on...must be a short somewhere? but where? and they are still flickering unless I turn the dimmer all the way to high.

Could use some help!

also, need ti upgrade the alternator....its 55 amp & I need over 100. hopefully I ca find a 130 amp that will work. I am running 600 watts of JL Audio, KenWood & Alpine.

thanks in advance!!

The LEDs probably need more resistance.

well, I'm not thinking my problem is low current draw, as the OEM lights flickered BEFORE I did anything... (like I said n the post)

I am familiar with the different current draws between LED and incandescent bulbs.....

I was hoping to find somebody that had similar electric gremlins... as these can be real hard to track down...Thanks.

Have you tried a new incandescent bulb?

Could just be a bad/ weak ground or loose power connection. Did they flicker at random times or was is when you hit bumps? Check the connections at the dimmer and fuse box, trace the wires out to ground and check them too.

Some leds have a voltage threshold below which they operate erratically if at all. Newer(quality) ones seem better at this than older ones. This may address the no light til dimmer turned up all the way. Do all lights in mode push buttons flicker with park/headlights off, full bright mode? When parking lights are on,do all mode button lights flicker or just A/C button light? If all are flickering with parking lights on,disconnect dimmer switch and jump wires at dash harness side of connector to see if flickering is eliminated.
Last thought, does all this occur with car running? Turn the key to on position without starting car and see if problem doesn't occur. If this is case, possible problem in alternator, possible regulator? You could unplug field connector at alternator and start car and observe logicon lights. If all ok,plug in alternator and see if flickering recurs.

thanks

Thanks EveryBody....now I have some places to start...

to answer all of You:
1: led & incandescent bulbs flicker if dimmer set anywhere below full bright.
2: when lights are turned on (parking or head lights) all a/c panel lights go out. (I don't have the overhead light installed at the moment, its getting 'repaired/modified'..)
3: the irregularity happens with engine off....I'm not sure if I tried it with engine running or not...(car is a bit tore apart) I try it running tho.

well, like I said, I have a few ideas from You All to get started on tracing back to the problem area....hopefully its a loose ground somewhere thats easy to find...LOL...

Thanks Again
