E shaft/flywheel play

K I will ask my question and then explain the situation.

The haynes manual says that the max amount of 'play" or movement in the flywheel should be .09 of an inch or something rediculously small.

Thats for haveing the front cover off and pulling/pushin on the flywheel and thus moving the e-shaft.

My situation: I have an 85 GSL with about 200 000 kms. Taking apart my engine for a rebuild and in terms of play in the flywheel i have probably between .5 of an inch and 1 inch. .....

What do i do, is this normal or......

OK when you check for eshaft end play your suppose to have the hub and all the bearings and gears that go on the front of the eshaft in order to check end play
.5 to one inch is way Uta tolerance are you checking with all the accessory's on the eshaft (bearings , spacer , thrust bearing ,oil pump gear ,front counter weight, distributor gear , and hub ? if you still have that much play something is wrong . you have to make sure these are on . then when you come to the close tolerances you have to adjust with a spacer or buy new bearings .then adjust again. there are many spacers available.

Ah, that could explain a bit since the front cover and all the front bearing shinanigance was off i believe. Ill have to check again but i think i will be replacing the bearings and whatnot anyways

Yes when i build a engine i always put new bearing in them kinda cuts down on alot of that stuff. just make sure you check with all that acessorys on and make sure the esaft bolt is torked to i belive 90lbs (ill probly get crusifyed but its been a while on a build ) then with a guage check eshaft movement.

Thrust bearings probably broke. You know what to do to fix it, right?
