dumb question about keys

I have only one key for my car. It looks worn but works fine. I recently bought a key plank on eBay but I'm wondering if I should 1) have the key cut from the original or 2) have Mazda cut the key from the VIN number. I suppose if my existing key works then option one should work just fine. Any suggestions?

Does anyone know if I can just walk into a Mazda dealer and walk out with the key?

If your key is pretty worn I would get one from mazda. I got a copy of my worn out key made and it only works if it is in the ignition one way (flip it upside down and it dosent work).

Could worn keys affect the steering wheel lock thing like not being able to free it?

Dan, a worn key should still undo the lock, if it's really worn you could probably pull it out with the ignition on. On mine when the key was worn the buzzercomes on even when the keys out and the wheel lock won't engage.
