drowning in fuel

ok...my old carb needed a rebuild, but instead i found a used carb that i was told worked good. i put it in....the car feels like its gonna start then nothing, checked the plugs...just like i thought they were full of gas....i cleaned them and burned them then tried it again, car started up....idle was high so i adjusted it...then turned it off and tried to turn on again, nothing...took out the plugs...same thing...then i pinched the fuel inlet to the carb....car starts up...turned it off and tried again without pinching it and nothing....car olny turns on when i pinch it.....what is happening cause im a little confused...dont know too much about carbs...thank you

Look down into the carb throat. Is there gas pouring out and puddling in the bores? You probably do have sticky float needles. Thats common on a carb thats sat for a while. Gas dries up and makes it all stick. Where the 2 fuel lines enter the top of the carb (banjo fittings). Rap them with a screwdriver handle or mallet to try and loosen up the floats. If its that bad, maybe you need to pop the top off and clean it out with carb cleaner and excersize the floats to free them up.
