Dr. Schweitzer's RX-7

I have a time capsule 1979 RX-7 (March 1978 build) that my uncle bought new, drove continually till I inherited it. Please let me know what you want to see!

Build date of 3/78 would make his a very early import of the SA models. Very nice inheritance,

There was some pre-production export vehicles built in Feb 78, but officially, export production began that March with about 3000 cars coming off the line.

This would average to 750 cars per week. S/N 2072 would put it at week three that March. I have #'s 1256 and 2402, built the week just before and after yours. What are your plans for the car?

There are actually three hood prop variations. First, was the type as this car has, RH side that folds and stores in the hood. Kind of makes sense in that the first versions they produced were RH drive, JDM cars for their home market.

Second and third variations both fold and store on the inner fender, one is a RH and the other is LH. I've never saw any info relating the changes to a given S/N or month.

In my observations, by Jan of 79, the LH drive cars had the props moved to the same side as the steering wheels. Most, if not all the 1st year evolutional changes were incorporated by then. The next changes were introduced in Jun / Jul of 79, when the 1980 models began production.

Thank you for sharing the pictures!! The battery with the blue top is original! Incredible that it wasn't tossed! The keys are original as is the keychain. I have the same keys and keychain that came with my 1980 LS, which I got from the original owner. Your 79 is an early production, lacking the right side mirror. The 3/78 build date is just incredible to find!!

The car appears to be mostly all original which is Incredible for the age. The radiator cap and the negative terminal are not original which is fairly common to see. Many normal wear and tune-up items are acceptable to replace, even as far as being on enthusiastowned cars. Not to much for concourse judging. The tall Fram oil filter is very old. I love the old oil change stickers on the door. I have had several RX-7's over rhe years that have had them and I always leave them in place. Very cool car, thank you very much for sharing!

User "banzai" mentioned that the gear shift **** appears to have been replaced. It is loose (i.e. not tightened down) on the shift lever, so perhaps someone has messed with it.

Banzai is correct in that the shift **** in your car is not original. There were two different 5spd shift ***** for the SA and this is unfortunately not one of those designs. It would be great to source a correct shift **** and get it installed. May be somewhat difficult to find unfortunately, but they are definitely out there.

Here are some paper (?) labels that were installed in the engine compartment.

Here is a paint mark on the distributor:
