Down to one belt. Is this dangerous?

Allright, a long time ago I snipped the A/C belt, but never bothered to take off the A/C equipment as it is supposed to be a pain to seal off the hoses, etc. Now, after I put the header on ('82 GSL) I have no use fo my air pump, and thus took the belt off of that. (This is after plating off the ACV, and plugging the small hole in the front portion of the air filter housing that used to lead to the air pump.) I can't take off the freaking air pump because the top bolt is too tight and now fairly stripped, but the belt is off. Now the only belt on there is driving the fan, alternator, and crank on the bottom. Bad idea? It hasn't given me problems except for a "slight" squeak when starting the car. Any opinions on any of this situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanx-
Gary

each of the 3 belts have their own job..
if ur not using the a/c and air pump then the belts arent needed so its fine and very normal to only have the water pump belt and alinator .. thats what i have..

Thank you- I was just curious because I know the other belts overlapped on some of the other pieces, so I guess I was just curious as if this belt would be fine by itself for the water pump, alternator, and still hold on to that fan.

It's generally not advisable to run only one belt with the mechanical fan. That squeal at higher rpm is the water pump and fan slipping. Not a good thing! There are three possible fixes:
1)Electric fan $20 (junk yard fan and manual switch) - $150+ (Black Magic or like with thermo switch)
2)Dual belt alternator pulley. $60
3)Short belt between the crank and water pump. Do a search, the part# for this has been posted a couple times.
IMO, electric fan is the way to go. It can be done low buck and it frees up some drag on the engine. My $10 junkyard fan cooled better then the stock mechanical fan.

dual belt altrnator pulleys are only $60 if you buy from Racing Beat. Here's a $20 alternative (1/3 the price!) :

I was under the impression that if you removed the air-pump pulley that you'd need another one to run the fan (as per the emissions removal tutorial).. am I wrong about this one?

Oh.. and the one the tutorial needs is a 3L220... I can't find them anywhere around here! only the 4L which I've been told won't work.. Anyone know where else I could try?

I've yet to find this belt either. Sears and lowes both didn't have it. Maybe there's an online source?

I think NAPA has them. I was there the other day and asked if they had it. The guy brought out a Gates belt that was something like 228 (a little over 22 inches, but not much). He also showed me a thin green fabric covered one that could have worked... probably. It is meant for fractional HP motors. I had little cash on me at the time, but when I get some more, I'll purchase the green one. I forgot to ask him if he could order a 220 Gates belt darnit. Oh well, my dual belt pulley setup only slips above 5k and I'm nursing a tranny with a nearly dead 2nd gear, so I try to take it easy.

Cool, thanks for the URL, I'll add it and others into the tutorial for the next update.

Cheers.

i use the single sheave underdrive pulley with the lone belt for the waterpump/alternator. It doesn't slip at all. Just have the tension slightly on the highside. Also, be sure you have the pulley surfaces completely clean and helps to use a 100grit sandpaper on them to be sure they will grap on the belt.

Since this is just a normal 22" belt, wouldn't any 22" lawnmower belt work?

Yesterday, I got bored, and decided, since I don't have the AC working, I didn't need that belt. (snip.)

I also figured, since I don't have an exhaust, I don't need the airpump running. (snip.)

So, only 1 belt for me. It squealed, I inspected, it was worn out, so it was replaced.

The local store didnt have the 13315 belt, so the closest they had, was a 15320. Its not as narrow as the original 13315, so it fit a little bit at an angle at first.

Drove it for a day, didn't slip at all....and now it sits better in the pulley groove.

Works just fine.
