Unhappy dont know where to start..please help

my 85 gsl 12a has had a acceleration problem that i have been trying to work through. While i was rehabing the cooling system I noticed that my first cat was glowing orange. So i went to the muffler shop to have cats bypased(i thought it was cloged cats)dude tells me it's not the cats it's that i am not burning all the fuel. So i checkover the ignition system cap, rotor, wires, plugs. Well while it was idling i pulled the leading plug off the distribitor(the one that goes from the lead coil to the center of the cap)nothing happened. Pulled the trailing wire, Car dies. Only other thing i can tell ya is the car runs good after 3grand in any gear before 3grand is hesatates. Also turning the mixture screw seems to have no effect.

Please help did search came u w/nothing also haynes manual is no help.

Thank for taking the time.PeterA.Trapino

Peter - I agree with mar3, it sounds like a dead leading ignitor. The car will run just the way you describe with just the trailing ignitor. It happened to me. Here's one on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2424259147
When you install the new ignitor (the one closest to the front of the car) use heat-sink compound. Ignitors generate a lot of heat and the compound will help transfer the heat away from the ignitor. Good luck!

Forgetaboutit, there's no such thing as an aftermarket J109 ignitor. Grab that one off of eBay (buy it now) or go to your local Mazda dealer and pay through the nose. Seriously, 29 bucks is a good price. Used ones from Mazdatrix go for 90 and new ones from Mazdatrix go for $204! The Mazda dealer will probably charge even more.

To test it further and to be absolutely sure it's the ignitor, pull the leading coil wire off and start her up. If she runs the same as before, it's the ignitor.
