Don't know where to start

Ok, Ive been wantin' an Rx7 ever since i was playin Gran Torismo 3 and saw that they had those awsome rotary engines id heard about. Ive found a couple i was goin to buy but they got sold or it fell through,

I finaly found one here in Springfield for $500
It's a '79 and looks good says it has 63k miles but i dont know. The dealership says it was driven there but they cant get it started now, it just makes a sound like a starter for a pistoned car and smoke comes out the exaust, then it back fires. My dad could turn the fan with his hand and said the pump to the carb was spewing fuel?
Neither of us Know anything about rotarys, I do know they are supposed to have compression and since he can turn it it doesnt have it.

Any help will be greatly apreciated

Thnx

Dustin

Thumbs up getting started

Dustin it could be alot of things after you get it to turn over with the starter,do a compression test some one else in this forum will tell you how much comp. it should have, if it starts hard and blows blue grey smoke then over heats or the radiator cap spews its probably warped housings not good,it will probably need a rebuild or find another egine and swapp em, but get it to start pay close attention to the temperature cuz mine did the same thing, then i swapped an engine outta a wrecked car and wala.i only paid 500 for mine and bought another with a tricked out engine for 200 but the body was wrecked Oh yeh you are probably addicted to rotaries but dont jump on the first one you see

Is it flooded? You can't just let a rotary sit for a while as it's flooded and expect it to start later on. Best thing to do would be to remove the top 2 (trailing) spark plugs. Put a newspaper or something to absorb the fuel as you crank the engine over a few times. Listen to the whisssh whisssh noises too. If you get 3 healthy pssh's then most likely the seals are okay. Crank it until most of the fuel is out of the combustion chamber. Check the spark plugs and if they are wet or fouled then either replace them or take a lighter and burn off the wet fuel on the ends and clean them thoroughly. Make sure you disable the ignition when you are cranking the motor and trying to unflood it. The easiest way to disable the ignition would be to disconnect the negative leads to both the ignition coils. The ignition coils should be located towards the front of the engine bay on the drivers side and should have one spark plug wire end attached to each of them. Once you have cranked the motor over and unflooded it re-install everything and see if you can't get it to fire up. If this doesn't work, then there may be more complicated engine problems involved. Good luck!

Being turned over by hand is normal. Rotories don't build lots of compression until they are spinning, forcing the seals against the housings by centripital force. Thats why it takes a bit more to start these things. But good luck with it beyond that.

Personally, for 500, unless the body is perfect, I would walk away. You can find them for about that price that RUN, and run well. Just keep looking!

Number 1 rule for people who have no experience with Rotaries... TAKE IT TO SOMEONE WHO DOES.

you can turn over rotary engine by hand very easily, they have much lower compression compaired to piston engines
