I'm assuming I was in the same boat as most of you with my bins. Bins in good shape, lids in good shape, hinges broken. Well cross that 3rd thing off my list. I impressed myself with how well this turned out. A couple piano hinges, some 3M VHB tape and a bit of metal removal in the bin frame and I have a bin hinge that will last a lifetime.
I did something similar with mine. The earlier style lids are much more cheaply made with not long enough of a flat surface.
I found this hinge which had shallow enough leaves to fit inside and riveted it to the bin.
Yes, piano hinges are the way to go -- nice job. I screwed mine through the plastic frame of the bin without VHB tape and I think it's strong enough. I used thread locker on the nuts on the back side and cut them off flush with a die grinder. Similar result, maybe a little easier.
BTW -- I'm a big fan of VHB. If used properly (like it appears you did), it's amazing stuff.
