Dirty fuel tank!!

I have alot of dirt and crap in my fuel tank. The fuel filters are always clogged with black gunk. How can I clean the tank without actually taking it out of the car?

Regards, Peter.

its rust, it will just keep coming back, find one at a junk yard if you cant afford a new one, i had good luck finding mine, less than 30 bucks, fought rust for several months and lots of clogged filters till i finally replaced it...good luck....
p.s. the stuff will get into the carb too,,,,and fuel lines...

your going to have to take out the tank, but you could possibly salvage it with some POR-15 Fuel Tank Sealer. http://www.por15.com/subcat.asp?id=42 I would use that instead of buying a used tank that who knows how long its going to last. Here's directions also. http://www.por15.com/uploads/files/t...directions.pdf I just dropped my tank and it was a bitch, i wouldn't wanna do it twice.

Crap. I hope I don't have to replace my fuel tank. Audrey was sitting for 2 years. When I drained the fuel tank, the gas was reddish orange.

I suppose she would be worth whatever I have to do.

I just replaced my tank recently with one out of parts car that had obviously been sitting a while. Yards(at least around here) are required to drain and rinse tanks when they get a car in to prevent leakage of fuel. The parts tank was in very good shape, and my filter has stayed clean since. It's worth the effort. I changed fuel filters on a monthly basis up until the swap.

Do yourself a favor and just replace the tank, unless you can afford to get it cleaned and sealed. I don't know how well the off the shelf products work, but I just don't think I'd want to go through the hassle of dropping the tank more than once. Actually twice considering we had to drop it out of he parts car as well.

Good luck,
Brian Heston

I agree. I used the POR-15 fuel tank restoration process and the tank is like new now. If you can't find a better tank, you have two options, have a shop seal it or do it yourself using the POR-15 products. If you do find a better tank, inspect it well and if there is any sign of rust inside I'd seal it.

I received my brand new tank from Mazda 2 days ago. It cost me 445$ canadian, which is about 300$ US I guess. I'd rather have peace-of-mind than always having to worry about that fuel filter, carb, etc. Well worth it.
