They are pretty easy to install. Download a copy of the FSM via member trochoid
profile. He has a link to all of the Factory service manuals.

How do I tell if I have a large or small axle??

I had a friend send me a rear-end out of a GSL.
He didn't know if it was from and 83, 84, or 85.

How do I tell which one I have

If you have an 84-5 driveshaft, see if it will mate up to the flange on the diff.

the 81-83 driveshaft has a rectangular bolt pattern, while the 84-85 has the 4 holes equal distance apart.. you could be able to tell just by examining the flange

The S2 small-spline diff also has threaded holes on the pinion flange. S3 will have thru-holes with nuts. THAT's the easiest way.
