differential bearing caps?
so i was pulling my GS differential and putting in a GSL limited slip differential but came across somethign odd..so the GSL diff should technically fit right into the GS housing right?
ya well i took mine out, tryed to put the GSL diff in and it stuck out 1/8th of an inch and would not go in any further...looking at both diffs side by side my original GS diff was a little different, someone had ground a small amount(estimated 1/32") off from the sides of the bearing caps, so i took the GSL diff and mimiced that by grinding a tad bit off each bearing cap and then she slid in as easy as bear-backing a two dollar ***** so anyone know why this was done? did factory do this? because im the second owner of this car and i dont think the first guy ever had the rear end serviced. dont get me wrong here my solution fixed the problem and all works great im just the uber curious type...
thanks

Ok, I'm looking at the thread but I have no clue what is going on. If Steve84GSTII was still an active user, he could tell you lots of info about these rearends. There are a few other forum users who might know. I, however, have never worked on a rear end nor posted about them, other than to ask questions, so I'm not sure what prompted you to ask me specifically to look here thinking I'd know anything... because I'm ignorant in this area Good luck, man.

well ya i know they are supossed to just bolt in but what im saying is for some reason the original diff in my axle housing was ground down on teh bearing caps to make it fit in which is strange....ill take a pic and post it
