different gas tanks for different years?

Hey guys,

Well looking at worse case scenarios on my hesitation/stalling thread, it looks like I may need to drop and replace or refurbish my gas tank. Doing some quick shopping on mazdatrix, a new gas tank for an '81-'83 is about $950! Whereas a new tank for an '84-'85 is about half the price ($480).

So, did the gas tank design change from '83 to '84? If so, can either be used in an '83?

Also, on a different note, has anyone had a gas tank refurbished (the inside cleaned up and repainted or whatever) and if so, roughly how much did it cost?

One last thing, how do you drain the gas tank? From looking aroud on it, there appears to be no drain hole.

Thanks.

the tank did change from 83 to 84, the 84+ have a drain plug in them. there was a thread with a link to a website that showed the difference a few weeks ago.

I have a Tank from an 84 SE here in GA, Sender is gone but the rest is here. Yours cheap if you want it.

What Car did you get?

Hey matthew,

I'll search for that thread, thanks for the heads up.

I picked up an '83 GSL this weekend actually. Its having some issues with a hesitation that leads to it stalling out that I think is related to the fuel deliver which could be releated to the tank being gummed up (there is rust on the underside of the cap and some visible when you look down into it). You can check out my thread for more details.

Thanks,

Zach

The SE tank will not fit in a non SE car. It is slightly different. Tried already. I had my tank acid washed and a resin put inside and sealed, it worked great. Cost $125.00 canadian.

Please explain. As far as I can tell, the only difference is the fuel supply and return line sizes.

First things first, pull your fuel filter and blow into the output of it. Let the contents go into a cup. See how much rust is in it.

The S3 Se and non-SE tanks are identical except for the slosh baffle around the fuel pickup and the the fuel lines sizes.

I just finished putting an SE tank in what was once a GS. The fit is fine. Search for a thread under my name and 'The facts', it show the 2 tanks side by side and the differences.

Sorry I can't help with the S2.

I must admit it wasn't me myself doing it. It was the repair shop saying no. If you have done it then I am sorry for the wrong info.

The filter is brand new, I just put it on. Or did you mean to check the one I just put on?

Thanks Matt, thats really helpful.

For those of you that made the change, if you look at those pictures, how do you deal with the different location of return/pick up lines on the -SE tank?

For the S3's, the only difference will be the hose sizes, between the FI and carb tanks. For the earlier years, since you should replace your fuel hoses anyway, so just cut them to the length you need.

What I found works best is, buy extra hose and attach it to the tank before you install it, leaving extra hose hanging out. Then cut to length and attatch the hoses to the hard lines, after the tank is in place.

Make sure you mark which hose is which, even though they are differnt sizes.
